I propose 'anti-prison'. All the world is a cage except small defined regions of freedom. If you do a crime you are released! But if you try and break back into the cage you are beaten and/or killed.
I'm a prison abolitionist for lots of reasons. One is that I find it unacceptably cruel as a form of social organization to lock people in cages and tell them they'll be beaten or killed if they try to get out.

Enjoyed the film. My one laugh out loud moment was when Odysseus tells Penelope that Agamemnon wants war with Troy due to shipping and trade. How very, very modern to treat economic social relations as the most basic cause.

We've written an update on Steam as well, where we go through what we think might have happened. It's really stupid and pretty alarming how easily such a major error was pushed by support staff. store.steampowered.com/news/…

Meanwhile Cornpop was real.
Trump: "They put it on a beautiful 757. They took all the seats out and they stuffed it with green cash from Virginia, Maryland, and DC. The banks had no money left. They literally -- and they delivered it to Iran. They took out satchels and sacks of money."

It annoys me that so many people are under the impression that this guy, Steven Bradbury, is some subpar goober who lucked his way into gold. That could not be further from the truth. This is one of the most satisfying victories in the history of the Olympics if you know the full backstory. This medal final was during his fourth Olympics, in Salt Lake City in 2002. Earlier in his career, he was among the best athletes in the world in this specific event, the 1000 meter short-track men's speed skate. But despite his talent, he just had some of the shittiest luck in the sport. We're talking a decade of shit luck. In the '94 Winter Olympics, he was considered the odds-on favorite to take gold, but he fell in his heat after getting illegally pushed by an opponent (who was later disqualified). He didn't get a re-do. That was it. He got shoved by some asshole, and his Olympics was over. Then in the '98 Winter Olympics, he was a favorite to at least medal in the same event but got caught up in a collision that wasn't his fault and failed to advance. In 1994, he got his thigh sliced open by a competitor's skate during a race, which required 111 stitches and 18 months of recovery time. In 2000, he broke his neck during training because a skater in front of him fell and tripped him up. That required a bunch of screws and plates being inserted into his skull and back and chest. And doctors told him that he should stop skating. But he didn't wanna give up. It meant too much to him. So, there he was in Salt Lake City in 2002, past his prime, a walking erector set, going up against opponents who were faster and younger and in their prime. He manages to win his heat and advance to the quarterfinal but then has the shit luck (yet again) of having to go up against the best two athletes in the quarterfinal and only the top two advance. He finishes third and thinks: "Damn, I gave it my best shot." But then, the second place finisher is disqualified, so Bradbury gets to advance to the semifinal. Now, at this point, he's thinking: Well, shit, I'm not as fast as these younger guys, and I got a bad habit of getting taken out by crashes that aren't my fault. So, he consults with the Australian national coach, Ann Zhang, and they decide that he should hang back from the pack and hope the pack crashes. That is a perfectly valid strategy. If you crash, you lose, but speed skaters risk crashing to gain an advantage in order to win. It may not feel exciting, but it is a valid strategy and just as risky: avoid crashes entirely and hope that pays off. It paid off in the semifinal: the pack, including the defending Olympic champion, jostled too much and crashed. Bradbury wins and advances. So, he's improbably in the final and takes the same approach, and it works: the entire pack jostles too much and crashes, and Bradbury's risk of hanging back pays off. This victory was not some un-athletic schlub lucking his way into gold. It was a journeyman athlete who never gave up and played smart after a career of shitty luck and finally got his due after it being snatched away from him so many times. Hands down, one of my favorite Olympics stories.
"Dude there's no way you could ever win unless every single person in front of you crashed"

I’m furious. We’ve gotten official word that “several” students at my college have had their visas pulled (among the hundreds reported across the country). No reasons given. My school is about as activist as a jar of peanut butter. My other international students are worried. Is there a list? Who’s being pulled. Is any politics bad? Now they’re afraid to express themselves. If you say “good,” you have my utter contempt. My foreign students came to America to learn, both the specifics of their majors, but also the larger lessons America has to teach about freedom and success, about being able to explore ideas and experiment with different versions of themselves. And Trump is taking that away. Be quiet. Keep your head down. Free speech is for others, not you. Just like back home. If you’re thrilled because all those blue-haired woke kids are getting their comeuppance, you should know that during the culture wars, my international students have always been a breath of fresh air, challenging woke shibboleths because they came from worlds where none of that made sense. I’d gladly take 10 kids from China over 10 kids from a progressive Brooklyn private school (sorry Zoe). But I’m sure the Trump administration is carefully vetting their deportation lists, not just doing random searches of social media sites for dangerous words like “trans,” or “Palestine,” or “free speech.” Because we can trust the government.

MAGA is making the claim that if you watch the entire 50 minute video, Zelensky is the antagonist. This isn't true. At all. I was with Zelensky before this meeting and it's important to know his mindset heading in. 1/ A short 🧵on how the entire ambush went down.
If you watch the full Trump-Zelensky press conference, it is very clear that Zelensky, not Trump or Vance, became the antagonist. Both POTUS and VP were very respectful and cordial until Zelensky very publicly ignited a firestorm. It all starts at 40:30 1) Zelensky essentially rejects how VP described the mandate of POTUS to conduct foreign affairs, and he insinuates that Trump term one did nothing to stop Putin. 2) He then basically tells Vance that his ideas are faulty and that the administration's diplomacy won't work. These two comments are *deliberately antagonistic.* Everything was all well and good, but Zelensky took two major shots in a public forum, and they had to respond. And respond they did. Recall, this is the guy who interfered in our electoral politics and called VP "too radical," and bashed Trump in an interview with New York Mag weeks before the election. Zelensky is ENTIRELY at fault here. 100%.

Here’s why Zelensky did the right thing by challenging Trump directly in front of cameras: Most people forget Trump capitulated to Taliban in 2020 long before the Biden withdrawal in 2021. @LTGHRMcMaster called it the “surrender agreement”. • Afghan government was not invited to negotiations (just like Ukraine) • US released 5,000 Taliban radicals • US reduced troop deployment by 50% • Taliban spent the next 18 months buying off Afghan military and tribal war lords. By the time Biden withdrew the remaining US troops, Afghan military offered no resistance. Government simply folded. Zelensky knows exactly what’s in store for him if he allows Trump to negotiate on his behalf.
Here's what happened inside the White House after the Oval Office shouting match: Trump huddled with his key advisers immediately afterward inside the Oval. According to a White House official, Trump consulted Vance, Rubio, Bessent, etc. That was when Trump decided that Zelensky was "not in a place to negotiate." He directed Secretary Rubio and his national security adviser Mike Waltz to deliver the message: it was time for Zelensky to leave. The Ukrainians were holding nearby in a separate room. (That's standard for foreign leader visits.) Typically they reconvene for lunch. But the Ukrainians would not be dining at the White House. As the prepared food sat nearby on carts in a hallway, the Ukrainians were instructed to leave. The White House official said the Ukrainians wanted to continue the talks. But they were told no. Zelensky left shortly thereafter.

My X feed right now is just a cascade of leaders from Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, France, Poland--even the US--expressing support for Zelensky as if Ukraine were just hit w/ a terrorist attack. Have never seen such an outpour in my life. All provoked by disgust for 2 men.
