Rebuilding stronger starts before the next disaster strikes. As director of the @LACoPublicWorks, Mark Pestrella oversees the largest municipal public works agency in the United States, providing vital public infrastructure and civic services to more than 10 million people across a 4,000-square-mile service area. Before moderating one of #ASCE2027’s vision and strategy sessions, he joins us Oct. 8 at 1:15 PM ET to discuss how resilient rebuilding can protect communities and accelerate recovery after crisis. Register today: go.asce.org/4rLw9gg. This ASCE Interchange Live is part of a special series highlighting the vision and strategy sessions, key themes, and keynote voices of ASCE2027: The Infrastructure and Engineering Experience. When the first section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike opened #OnThisDay in 1940, motorists encountered something they had never seen before: a road free of traffic lights, intersections, railroad crossings, and pedestrian crossings. The four-lane divided highway stretched 160 miles from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh, setting a new standard for highway design and becoming the prototype for the modern high-speed, limited-access superhighway. From abandoned rail tunnels revived for a new purpose to innovations that helped engineers complete what was then the largest single highway project in U.S. history, the turnpike transformed the future of long-distance travel. Bioluminescent algae may have a bright future in civil engineering. A recent study conducted at the University of Colorado Boulder found that the light of Pyrocystis lunula can be switched on using chemical triggers. In nature, the algae flashes for only milliseconds in response to movement in the water; however, the new approach can keep them illuminated for minutes at a time, opening new practical applications from soft robotics to space exploration. In partnership with @BentleySystems and @Siemens and hosted by @wsp, the ASCE Resilience Forum brought together infrastructure leaders from government, industry, and academia during #ClimateWeekNYC to explore how planning, technology, policy, and community engagement are shaping the future of resilient infrastructure. Grounded in themes from #ASCE’s newly released Built to Endure report, developed in partnership with @NichInstitute, Bentley Systems, @AECOM, and @Microsoft, the conversation reinforced a clear message: resilient communities are built through cross-sector collaboration and sustained investment. A new underwater habitat for scientific research has been anchored to the seabed in U.S. waters about 4.5 miles off the Florida Keys. Known as Vanguard, the habitat will support research while serving as a test bed for future undersea projects. Learn about the history and engineering that made it possible on the #ASCESource: go.asce.org/4xKMbIJ.

No matter how strong an incentive or pressure may be in the moment, a decision to chase personal profit at the expense of ethical norms rarely yields gains that are worth the costs. A sampling of cases demonstrates the importance of ethical standards in preserving public trust, illustrating the great personal and professional costs of abusing this trust for selfish gain: go.asce.org/4iGpZvu.
