The ORR estimates that Network Rail could face £2.3 billion of additional pressures over a five-year period. Meanwhile, leasing trains from private ROSCOs saw £2.9 billion funnelled out of the railway in profits and dividends in the last five years alone!
Our latest assessments show that Network Rail is exceeding its efficiency targets, but rising costs and reduced financial headroom are increasing pressure on renewals. Read our latest blog: orr.gov.uk/search-news/netwo…

In 2025, a Network Rail chief engineer put it bluntly: "For a sustainable asset, we need to renew 2.5% of our assets. We're projecting 0.75% – doing less renewals than we need to to be sustainable." The true cost of cuts is drivers', our colleagues and our passengers' safety.

Spot on from @ASLEFunion 📣 “That’s why we say it’s time we owned our own trains – to get our money back on track, not seeing it leave the station to move offshore, and to get Britain moving on the right lines again.” labouroutlook.org/2026/09/26… #Lab26

The Secretary of State for Transport has just announced the future of rolling stock on our railways. ROSCOs have taken £2.9 billion out of the railway in profits and dividends in the last five years. All new rolling stock should be publicly owned. It's time to Own Our Trains.

Andy Burnham is right: it’s time for ordinary people to take back control. Control of the services we all rely on is critical to get the country back on track. It will take all of us together to do it. True public ownership for people, not profit.

The government will explore whether the public can directly own the new trains ordered under Great British Railways 👏 Trains are currently leased from private companies at huge cost. Let's keep the money on the track, not send it offshore. It's time to Own Our Trains.

Avanti West Coast will be brought into public ownership 👏 A railway run for people, not profit.
Enough is enough. For years, people have been expected to put up with Avanti’s cancellations, delays, overcrowding, and a service that has failed them time and time again. So my Labour government is bringing Avanti West Coast into public ownership at the earliest opportunity in March next year. That means passengers, not shareholders, will come first. More investment, fewer delays, and a renewed focus on getting the basics right. We're putting essential services back in public hands and building a railway that actually works for the people who use it.

“Absolutely disgusting.” Parents reacted with boos and jeers after a Reform-run council in South Tyneside voted to close 10 nurseries. The publicly owned South Tyneside Accredited Network for Learning in the Early Years (Stanley) provides affordable, quality childcare and employs over 100 people. Working parents will now only have the option to use private nursery providers of variable price and quality, Mark Wilson of the GMB union told the BBC in June.

ASLEF has a proud history of championing the rights of trans women and non-binary people. That’s why our Annual Assembly of Delegates voted to boycott the Labour Party’s Women’s Conference this year, due to trans women being excluded from attending. Solidarity.

This is brilliant news - public ownership, not just public control. This is an incredible route for London’s buses.
A new chapter for London’s buses. I’m launching Buses for London with @TfL - the capital’s publicly owned bus company. Starting with Route 6 in 2027, we’ll reinvest profits into better services, safer journeys and a greener network. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ck5y…

The recent Department for Transport post on battery-electric trains, coupled with the recent order for TPE, is a worrying indicator as to where the Rolling Stock and Infrastructure Strategy is headed. Battery-electric trains aren't a viable solution for freight. 🧵1/8

For example: on the West Coast Main Line, a diesel Class 66 slows down to 25mph over Shap summit, and a bi-mode Class 88 down to 48mph. Two fully electric Class 90 trains can run in tandem at 75mph. Only full electrification will deliver for both passengers and freight. 7/8

Battery electric trains aren’t as efficient, are more expensive and have a greater environmental cost. Full electrification is the way forward. We've already started - it needs finishing throughout Britain. Read more here: aslef.org.uk/RailFreightFutu… 8/8
