The Nineties weren't for wet-wipes, by Julie Burchill (@BoozeAndFagz) The real glory of the Nineties was that there seemed a (now) extraordinary degree of freedom to do and say what one wanted to. State scolding had not become a permanent thing; weather forecasters’ warnings never got more presumptuous than a what-are-you-like snicker of ‘don’t forget your brolly!’ We were not urged to ‘stay hydrated!’ as though the daily commute was a trek across the Sahara, nor taught that a good summer was a harbinger of Armageddon. (The nearest we got to that was Worms Armageddon, a 1999 video game.) Read more: buff.ly/kD1AMZq

With tedious predictability @TheGreenParty manage to combine misogyny and authoritarian suppression of legal speech in one go. But hey, encountering different views makes some feel “unsafe”. Better ban ‘em!
In a hypnotically predictable move, The Green Women’s Declaration have been told that they make trans members feel “unsafe” and been banned from the conference. What an abuse of the word unsafe. * Unsafe is allowing male convicts into women’s prisons * Unsafe is forcing women to share changing rooms with men * Unsafe is denying women with disabilities single sex care * Unsafe is men sharing toilets with women and girls Women standing for their rights and holding a political party to account makes nobody unsafe. It does show who the charlatans and chancers are. Snap out of it! telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

Speaking as the elderly mother of three youngsters, who hasn’t had a sex change and knows many homosexuals, it is my able-bodied and sexually-preferred opinion that the Greens are turning into total nutters.

"... the core of the nature-worship which initially inspired the Green movement is a misanthropy which often sees the people outside of one’s favoured circle as little more than a blot on the landscape. ... You need a loud voice and sharp elbows to get to the top of the grievances hot-list these days, and qualify as a member of a “vulnerable” group deserving respect and attention; something which we, the disabled, tend to be lacking in, broken in varying degrees as we are."

There is something especially ugly about a member of parliament floating conspiracy theories while investigators are still establishing how close 174 people came to being murdered in a hijacked plane to Israel. Yet that is precisely what Ayoub Khan, the “Gaza independent” MP for Birmingham Perry Barr, has done. I’m referring, of course, to the flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv, which was narrowly prevented from causing Israel’s 9/11 by the heroism of the passengers. Investigators, Khan suggested – nudge, nudge – were moving suspiciously fast. “Normally it takes them months if not years,” he wrote on X. “I think I smell a rat!” Now, what “rat” would that be, Mr Khan? Let’s take stock for a moment. A British MP watches Israel investigate a seeming attempt to bring down an airliner full of people bound for Israel. His instinct, apparently, is neither relief that they survived nor sympathy for the wounded captain. Instead, he winks at his followers: something fishy is going on here. If this were an isolated lapse, it would be bad enough. It isn’t. Khan has form. And his position in parliament is a disturbing indictment of British politics, and indeed the state of the country... Only Israelis — In a couple of minutes they smashed through the cockpit door after hearing the screaming, neutralized the terrorist co-pilot, dragged a passenger doctor in to save the captain, put another passenger pilot at the controls, landed the nearly crashing plane safely with no casualties, and stopped a second September 11th. Fucking HEROES 🇮🇱

The Nineties weren't for wet-wipes, by Julie Burchill (@BoozeAndFagz) A new exhibition about the Nineties opens next week at the Tate Britain. That it is curated by Edward Enninful may strike one with delight or dismay, depending on one’s opinion of him. Just as every superhero must now have A Dark Side — which seemed kind of interesting the first few times it was done, but now has the heavy hand of Author’s Message with a side-dish of scolding — so must every decade. The Nineties didn’t feel like a dark decade, certainly compared to decades full of foreboding, like the Thirties, or indeed right here, right now, but Enninful’s choices seem determined not to provide simply a fun day out. "despite what the press release claims, there weren’t any “joyful queer club nights”. Back then, “queer” was just an insult which ignorant people threw at gay people, before it became a description which boring people used to make themselves feel interesting."
