New paper out: memory symptoms in functional cognitive disorder and persistent post-concussion syndrome are better understood as disorders of distributed memory control (thalamic gating + prefrontal metacognition + sleep-dependent consolidation) than as hippocampal storage failure.
FCD enters top-down via overfitted “I am failing” priors. PPCS enters bottom-up from a real neurometabolic hit; in vulnerable people, concussion can act as a gateway to FCD. Shared substrate: maladaptive, use-dependent plasticity.
