According to data shared by DGP office, the Singappen Special Force (SSF) attended 1,045 complaints on the spot and traced 15 missing women and 16 missing children during September as part of its efforts to enhance the safety and protection of women and children across the state. The SSF facilitated the registration of 75 cases through its interventions between September 1 and 30. The team also conducted 2,812 awareness programmes in educational institutions, 11,787 programmes at other locations and 706 programmes among migrant labourers. As part of preventive policing, SSF personnel made repeated visits to 57,183 identified hotspots to strengthen surveillance and ensure the safety of vulnerable persons. The team also rescued 25 intellectually disabled persons, including 22 women and three men, prevented 17 child marriages and facilitated the re-enrolment of 227 school dropout children. In one of the incidents, on September 27, the Flower Bazaar District SSF team was on patrol when a 19-year-old woman who had alighted from an MTC bus approached them and complained that a man had allegedly misbehaved with her during the journey. The team immediately apprehended the man and handed him over to the jurisdictional police. A case was registered and the accused was arrested and remanded in judicial custody. In Tenkasi, an SSF team noticed during an awareness programme at a school that a Class XII student, aged 17, had been absent for nearly two months. During an enquiry, the student allegedly disclosed that two neighbours had sexually assaulted and threatened her on several occasions, following which she stopped attending school. The SSF informed the Child Welfare Committee and facilitated further action. A case was registered and the accused were arrested and remanded in judicial custody. On September 29, the Koyambedu District SSF team, while on patrol, received information about the alleged harassment of a woman. The team reached the spot and enquired with her, following which she alleged that a man had recorded her on his mobile phone without her consent. The SSF informed the concerned police station and assisted her in lodging a complaint. A case was registered and the accused was arrested and remanded in judicial custody. The SSF has also organised a short film competition for university and college students to create wider awareness about the safety of women and children. Students can submit entries through the designated online link until October 10. The competition has three themes the role of men in women’s safety, bystander intervention, and the role of society in preventing crimes against women and children.
