Mums whose babies contracted life-threatening sepsis and meningitis from Group B strep are calling on pregnant women to join a new NIHR-supported vaccine trial. Affecting 1 in 1,750 babies in the UK and Ireland, it is the most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborns. Tragically, around 50 babies die each year, and a further 70 survive with long-term disabilities. The NIHR-supported BEATRIX study is the world's first large-scale phase 3 vaccine trial for #groupBStrep. Our CEO, Prof @LucyChappell2, says: “Every woman who takes part brings us closer to the evidence we need to protect babies and mothers.” Read more about the trial and stories from impacted families: nihr.ac.uk/news/pregnant-wom…

As Minister Smyth told the House of Commons on 8 September: "The NHS will follow the law. New guidance has been drafted and will be published imminently." That remains the case, and that is what Minister Smyth explained again during her meeting with the Darlington nurses.
🚨 BREAKING: Health minister Karin Smyth has told the Darlington nurses there is no plan for new NHS rules on single-sex spaces, despite the government previously promising action and institutions repeatedly saying they are 'waiting for guidance' following the Supreme Court ruling 18 months ago. Bethany Hutchison and Annice Grundy met the minister in Leeds following the nurses’ landmark employment tribunal victory. The nurses warned that, without clear national rules, NHS trusts remain free to impose policies that undermine the privacy, dignity and safety of female staff. Bethany said: “The government has had long enough. The law is clear. Women should not have to go to court simply to secure a safe place to change.” The Darlington nurses are calling for urgent, legally compliant NHS guidance protecting single-sex spaces.
