I just finished presenting my 2027 Recommended Budget to the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors. This budget has been built during a moment in our county’s history that demands tough decisions and a clear view of what our residents need. I am proud to present a balanced budget for 2027, closing a projected $50 million gap while preserving the County services our residents rely on. I want to recognize and appreciate the Milwaukee County leaders and Changemakers for their continued dedication to our residents and for approaching a challenging budget with creativity and discipline. I look forward to engaging in good faith with our County Board Supervisors so that, together, we can deliver real results for the people we serve. 📺Watch my full budget address: piped.video/watch?v=xvnUjRPk… 📑Read my 2027 Recommended Budget: county.milwaukee.gov/EN/Stra…

This is what it looks like to lift up our community. Today, we officially opened the doors to the Phoenix Residential Apartments, a first-of-its-kind affordable housing and crisis respite development in Milwaukee's Uptown neighborhood. By bringing critical services together under one roof, through a partnership with Aurora Health Care, we're able to bridge the gap between housing insecurity and behavioral health needs. Thank you to @mkecodhhs Housing Services, KG Development, and all the organizations who made this groundbreaking development possible. We don’t do this work alone, and these invaluable partnerships make our community stronger and healthier.

Twenty-five years ago today, we lost nearly 3,000 lives in an act of terror that changed our nation forever. The images we saw and the shock, fear, and heartbreak we felt remain etched in our collective memory. To the firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and first responders who ran toward danger without hesitation to save others: Thank you. The courage you displayed that day is the truest form of heroism. To our veterans and active-duty service members, many of whom served in the wake of 9/11: Your sacrifice, and the sacrifices made by your families, remind us of the true cost of freedom. Today, Milwaukee County pauses to remember every victim, every family left behind, and every act of courage shown that morning and in the days that followed. May we honor those we lost not only with our words today, but with our actions each and every day. We will never forget. We will always honor. And together, here in Milwaukee County and across the nation, we will always move forward with hope. 🇺🇸

Today, I signed legislation approving $7.5 million in Opioid Settlement Funds for eight initiatives aimed at reducing opioid and substance use disorder, expanding treatment and prevention services, and saving lives. The opioid crisis has devastated families, strained our systems, and disproportionately harmed communities of color across our county. We've made measurable progress in this fight, and the projects approved in this next cohort build on that momentum, directing resources to the programs best positioned to reach people where they are. There is still work to be done, and my administration is committed to spending these funds responsibly and effectively, because no family should experience the pain of losing someone to overdose Learn more about the eight projects funded for fiscal years 2027-2029 here ➡ county.milwaukee.gov/EN/Coun…

Public safety partners should have the right tools to keep Milwaukee County safe, but unchecked surveillance isn’t the answer. We have seen what can happen when this technology operates without clear rules, transparency, and accountability. Protecting our residents' privacy and maintaining the public's trust is a responsibility I take seriously. That is why I am directing all County departments to limit the usage of all Flock camera systems and establish safeguards proactively, before a breach of public trust can occur. If you're flying into @MitchellAirport, be sure to make a stop at the new Spirits of Wisconsin shop in the main terminal for bottled spirits, snacks, and gifts - all crafted right here in our state! It's the perfect way to get a taste of Wisconsin, and every purchase supports the small businesses and distillers that make our state special. I recently got a firsthand look at some of the incredible makers showcased in this shop. I had the opportunity to meet with representatives from Driftless Glen Distillery, Dancing Goat Distillery, Drink Wisconsinbly, Great Lakes Distillery, Central Standard, and Blue Ash Farm Spirits - and sample some of their products! Supporting local businesses isn't just good for our economy; it's how we keep Wisconsin's story alive. Cheers! 🥃

Each year, Milwaukee County works to build an annual budget, representing our plan for how we'll fund services next year — from public transit and parks to mental health services and affordable housing. To ensure our 2027 budget reflects the priorities of our residents, we need your input. Milwaukee County leaders will host two public listening sessions to learn what is most important to you as we work together to move our community forward. Each event will begin with a resource fair featuring Milwaukee County departments and programs, followed by a presentation on the County's budget priorities and an opportunity to share your thoughts on where funding should go in 2027. I recently had the opportunity recently to reflect on the progress we've made in #Milwaukee County toward our vision of becoming the healthiest county in #Wisconsin. In just the last few years, we've seen: 🔴 28% ⬇️ in motor vehicle crash deaths 🟠 43% ⬇️ in overdose deaths 🟡 22% ⬇️ in cardiac arrests 🟢 20% ⬇️ in homicides 🔵 76% ⬇️ in hospital diversions 🟣 Wisconsin's first EMS whole blood program 🟤 Wisconsin's first EMS buprenorphine (for opioid) treatment program ⚫️ Wisconsin's first harm reduction vending machine program Each of these moves the needle on health. Each reflects what is possible when government, healthcare, public safety, community organizations, and residents work toward a shared vision. Thank you to County Executive @DavidCrowleyWI for providing that vision and empowering departments like @CountyDhhs, @MKE_OEM, @CountyParks and so many others across Milwaukee County’s 4,000 employees to innovate, collaborate, and improve the lives of the people we serve. There is still much work ahead. But this is what progress looks like.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of joining the Milwaukee County Department of Health & Human Services Prevention and Harm Reduction team to announce and celebrate the next cohort of Better Ways to Cope grantees. Back in 2023, Milwaukee County learned we'd receive $111 million over 18 years through nationwide opioid settlements — the largest amount recovered by any local government in Wisconsin's history. And we have put those dollars to work. We’ve distributed harm reduction supplies countywide. We’ve expanded treatment capacity for those working hard to overcome addiction. We’ve strengthened the data that guides our decisions. And we’ve granted millions of dollars to organizations like the ones in this next cohort, so we can reach even more people who need help. Congratulations to the 2026 Better Ways to Cope Grantees: - Cudahy Health Department - Milwaukee Turners – Prevention - Mental Health America of Wisconsin - Community Center for Immigrants - ProSay (Our Community) - Inner Beauty Center - Benedict Center - United Community Center – Treatment - Great Lakes Dryhootch - Manna Behavioral Services Thank you for your dedication, your persistence, and your work to save lives in Milwaukee County. I'm grateful to stand with you — as your supporter, your collaborator, and your partner in this fight. Learn more: county.milwaukee.gov/EN/Coun…
