A spectacular piece of deep investigative work by @CarrieTait Grant Robertson and @nvanderklippe. Although “Alberta separatists” aren’t and never will be a danger, this shows just how serious about conquering former allies the Trump admin is, and how these fifth columnists work

It breaks my heart, but we’ve gotta keep staying away
Visitors to the US are on track to drop by almost two million year-on-year. “We’re the only major country in the world losing visitation,” the head of the US Travel Association said. “It’s mind-boggling.” semafor.com/article/09/29/20…

Oh boy. And of all the chatbots….
For a long time I've wanted a sense of how trump has or hasn't interacted with chatbots (we know he posts a lot of slop sure). And this TIME anecdote about Grok arguably leading Trump into war is just extremely bracing

It has always been a belief of his, long before he completely lost it and against all evidence, that he must be an intelligent person because a sibling of one of his parents once taught at a good university, and he somehow genetically inherited whatever qualities got him that job
TRUMP: Did you see the story about my uncle? TIME: The one who taught at MIT? TRUMP: I have the highest of IQs. I have the highest.

Trump on Canada: "They act like they're totally innocent. They're not. They were very bad. But now they're being taught a little lesson. In fact, we just named a certain lake Lake America. Lake Ontario is now named nake -- and it actually passed"

I am not joking when I say this. Making love is over. [I think you know how to complete this one]
I am not joking when I say this. Traveling is over. Google Street View is now very, very good. You just don’t know yet because all the street views you’ve seen are from 2-3 generations ago. Google Street View has solved infinite personalized travel.

“Overall, the probability that a plane full of Israelis will contain a trained assault team, two additional pilots, and, statistically, at least one cardiac surgeon, psychologist, lawyer, and diamond dealer is substantially higher than 50%.”
A passenger on the Dubai–Tel Aviv flight recounts: “We are currently in Saudi Arabia. One of the crew members attacked the pilot with a knife and disabled the aircraft’s systems. Yaniv (pictured?) and another passenger stormed the cockpit and subdued the attacker. Luckily, there were two more pilots on board. They were the ones who managed to land the plane.” Well, yes. Overall, the probability that a plane full of Israelis will contain a trained assault team, two additional pilots, and, statistically, at least one cardiac surgeon, psychologist, lawyer, and diamond dealer is substantially higher than 50%.

From our perspective here in Canada, what's equally mind boggling is that Americans elected Trump twice. That's why we don't think relations will come back to what they were before Trump after he leaves.
It is genuinely mind boggling to watch Donald Trump turn around and brand Canada, our closest neighbor and one of our oldest friends as 'one of the worst countries in the entire world,' simply because they stood their ground and matched his aggressive tariffs dollar for dollar. How did we get to a place where we are actively escalating an economic war against an ally that has had America's back for generations, while simultaneously claiming we get along better with authoritarian regimes? It feels entirely backwards, if not completely reckless. Threatening our closest neighbors and treating a sovereign ally like a misbehaving territory isn’t some masterclass in negotiation; it is the needless, painful destruction of a vital relationship we cannot afford to lose

Wait, the guy who sang these lyrics is endorsing the flaky right-wing mayoral candidate? The guy who has been on the radio for decades singing “Philosophers and ploughmen, each must know his part”? Inconceivable!

He goes to the airport to greet (1) a communist dictator and a (2) Russian imperialist who has slaughtered hundreds of thousands, and (3) praises a ruthless autocrat in North Korea, but... Canada is one of the best countries in the world. This is not normal. I find it hard to understand how anyone could still support this foreign policy. It does not advance American nationalist interests or American values.

The cause of Palestinian statehood and human rights — which most Western citizens fundamentally agree with — has been fatally discredited and set back at the worst time by the presence of this stupid and bigoted person in the UN office responsible for its advocacy
I sincerely apologize. I misread the term "Muselmann" (Muslim) used in Nazi camps for prisoners at the brink of death, wrongly inferring that the term antisemitism originally meant hatred of all Semitic peoples. In fact it was coined specifically to denote hatred of Jews.

This is an example of how to articulately speak up for this cause without discrediting it and driving otherwise pro-Palestinian citizens and governments away from it. The UN made a terrible mistake in putting a politically incompetent simpleton in this office instead

Trump loves and defers to left-wing dictators more than he does right-wing autocrats or any form of democratic leader. Part 800 in a series
“I've interviewed President Trump about his relationship with Xi Jinping. President Trump thinks they are friends. He thinks they really like each other. And he thinks that this friendship can get all sorts of things for him and for the United States. He thinks that President Xi is not going to attack Taiwan, because he wouldn't do that to his friend Donald Trump. That's how trump really thinks about it.” “Trump is also not a China hawk. In his first term, he had a lot of China hawks around, Pompeo and Pence and these kinds of guys. Not not so much anymore. And what Trump believes is that the U.S. and China should have sort of an agreement to sort of divvy up the world - spheres of influence - and then just sort of get along as much as possible. That's also what XI jinping believes.” “Now, the problem, of course, is that the on the Chinese side, they're doing a lot of things that threaten our national security, our public health, our prosperity. Then why the praise? Well, because Trump is not a China hawk. He doesn't really care about that kind of stuff. He thinks it's about business. It's about investment. It's about keeping the relationship in check so that he can pursue his other adventures, like in Iran, et cetera.” “And you could say that plays into XI Jinping’s hands. Because if you think about the things that are really threatening us. China's expanding militarily. They're interfering in democracies. They're stealing our intellectual property. They're providing intelligence to the Iranians to kill Americans in the Middle East. It's really hard to address those things when the main goal of your policy is just to keep everything copacetic.”

This is actually a good ranking — I’d make a few swaps in the top 20 but weirdly matches my perception. The sole major exception, ironically considering who I’m QTing here, is the inclusion of LOST anywhere on that list

I’m not bothered by this but I AM bothered that the New York Times now considers “debuted” a word its writers may use. *Made* its debut. *Had* its debut. *Enjoyed* its debut. But never “debuted.” Or “exited” for that matter.

When television was developed in the 1930s, the Times of London complained that you can’t have a product that’s a Greek prefix attached to a Latin suffix and then asked readers to decide what we’d all call the people who watched television and settled with “lookers-in”
