Yesterday, after days of extreme rainfall, a massive mountainside collapsed near Mustang along the Kali Gandaki. But this is not an isolated incident. Floods, landslides and road collapses are happening across multiple parts of Nepal right now, damaging homes, bridges, highways and entire communities.
Extreme rainfall triggered this destruction. And these repeated disasters are a reminder of the much bigger climate crisis we are living through.
Just days ago at the UNGA, Balen Shah spoke about Nepal and our region being “hit by the climate we did not warm,” and warned that disasters in the Himalayas are not Nepal’s problem alone. The Himalayas support ecosystems and water systems far beyond our borders.
What we are seeing today should be a warning to everyone. Nature does not care about borders. We need to protect our forests, rivers, mountains and environment before the damage becomes irreversible.
Nepal may be feeling it today, but if we continue ignoring nature, tomorrow the whole world will pay the price.
