I treat AI like an employee when it comes to solving problems. This was the process you could follow with a human: 1. Someone comes to you with a problem 2. You ask them what the 3 potential solutions they're thinking about are 3. You pick the best one For AI I do exactly the same. Like, we find a problem, whatever it is. I then say "Suggest 3 solutions". And also ask AI to give the pros and cons of each. Then you make your decision. And I think it's a pretty good process.

The best skill you can learn as a Shopify App Founder is making decisions. Building is solved. Distribution is almost solved. So if you can make better decisions than others, you win.

Tons of great events here in India while getting ready for @ShopQuestHQ Great talk from @DebMecca and panel including @DsMatie on Sidekick and impact to Shopify Apps. I don’t even have an app and still learned a lot of interesting things I can find useful.

I'm building App Store Pulse in public because it's the best way to attract customers while building. It's also the best way to attract talent if I want to hire. It's like a cheat code.

Developers were already building too much and marketing too little. And now, because of AI, it's worse than ever. And I think in the long term it will just increase the gap between businesses. If you're doing something bad, it will become worse. If you're doing something good, it will become better.

I'm not making App Store Pulse a replacement for Mantle. We share some features, but our goals are different. For example, we won't have billing management. We also offer more features related to the Shopify App Store. I basically want you to own your funnel.

Shopify App Store faces a problem today. It has become a race to see who can build the most features. But a business is more than that 🤷‍♂️ Because as soon as a competitor builds more than you, you lose. So build relationships with your merchants, partners, etc. They will choose you not just based on features, but because they like the "brand" and the team behind it. I'd like to know how many Shopify Apps would survive if the Shopify App Store disappeared tomorrow.

I love working on App Store Pulse. 🔥 It has a special taste when you're building for people like you. You understand them better You enjoy spending time with them

Most Shopify app founders fail for a simple reason: They start with an idea. Not with a merchant problem. If nobody is already complaining about it, be careful. You might be building a feature for yourself, not a business.

How to validate a Shopify app idea in 30 days: Talk to 10 merchants. Look for the same painful problem. Ask what they use today. Ask what would make them switch. Then decide if the idea deserves code.

I just sent a newsletter to the 2500 subscribers of "Building a Successful Shopify App" Then I remembered I hadn't shared it here in a VERY long time. I send an email every 2 weeks with what I learned. You can subscribe here: news.matdesousa.com

Shopify App Owners: Stop obsessing over installs. Obsess over activation. A merchant installing your app means nothing. A merchant reaching the first real value moment means everything. Installs make you feel good. Activation makes you money.

1 day before going to India for @ShopQuestHQ If you'll be there, don't be shy and say hi.

Start delegating to save time, not to make more money. If you feel like you're spending your time on support -> delegate If you feel like you're spending too much time building features -> delegate And try to delegate marketing only later.

Growing a Shopify App doesn't look like this: - 0 user - 56 users - 143 users - 250 users It looks like this: - 0 user - 1 user - 3 users - 5 users - 15 users - 45 users - 100 users - 250 users You're not failing; you're just at the beginning, and it compounds.

When can we have a way to let our AI agent check our app in the Shopify Admin Dashboard? To do some QA before I manually check it It would make my life easier 😂

A simple rule for Shopify app founders: Find a problem merchants already hate Build the smallest useful fix Get the first users manually Track activation before adding features You do not need a bigger roadmap. You need tighter feedback loops.

I can't repeat it enough, but if you want to start a Shopify app, you have to start with things that don't scale. 1 user at a time. Don't try to find something to attract dozens of merchants.
