@universityofga students all the time. When I started touring clubs, putting records in stores and visiting radio stations I wasn't competing with bands from the last 40 years. But my students playing americana-ish stuff are literally competing with me for slots on festivals like
@andbeyondfest. Look I'm not complaining. But it's a real phenomenon. Has something to do with the fact Gen X is willing to spend money going out to shows, so their tastes get catered to. Also 40 years ago, records went out of print, radio only had so many slots for airplay, and record stores only had so much rack space. "Infinite shelves" means you're competing with hits from the past, and past hits are lower risk than new stuff.
