Testosterone actually drops with regular pornography use. It goes up with real sex. Studies have shown this, and I think it's not what most people would expect. It's the same basic behavior on the surface, but the hormone moves in opposite directions.
Here's why, I think. Pornography still gives your brain a hit of dopamine. But it skips the part that matters most, which is oxytocin. Oxytocin only comes from real touch and real presence with another person. Real sex gives you both the dopamine and the oxytocin.
I think about this in the depression and men too. Low testosterone shows up there a lot. A lot of men reach for more stimulation when what actually helps is more real connection, and more meaningful activity, preferably coordinated, goal focused activity within a team, which provides a great hit of both dopamine and oxytocin. Think teams sports or any other kind of competitive team based activity.
If you've swapped the real thing for a screen, both in terms of sex and accomplishment (e.g. video games) and you feel worse instead of better, this might be part of why.
