California Gov. Gavin Newsom just signed a raft of laws aimed at ICE agents, including a ban on the agency’s use of “𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬.” He says the immigration enforcement operation has “gone too far,” according to the New York Post.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli answered fast. “𝘎𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘰𝘳, 𝘸𝘦’𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺. 𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘧𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. 𝘜𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘯𝘰 𝘫𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯,” he said, urging agents to ignore the shock-glove law.
Newsom also backed a measure barring ICE agents accused of serious misconduct from ever being hired as California peace officers or state employees. State Sen. Kelly Seyarto said it’s unfair to people who are “𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘫𝘰𝘣.” State Sen. Tony Strickland said it’s “𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘵 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘺.”
It isn’t Newsom’s first run at this. The Post reports a federal judge already halted enforcement of his law banning federal officers from wearing masks this year, and legislative analyses warn the latest measures 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐞.
Meanwhile, Newsom slapped a 25% tax on private detention facilities and gave Californians the power to sue federal officials. Strickland’s advice to the governor: “𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘸𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘦𝘵’𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘧𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘨𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵.”
