building the service layer for the new hardware economy, backed by a16z @speedrun | ex-@PalantirTech | @dartmouth'22

San Francisco, CA
I'm excited to officially announce that @TheRobertDoh and I are backed by @a16z @speedrun!! I deployed AI inside complex industrial operations at Palantir. Rob ran Citadel’s infrastructure & data center operations. Now we are applying what we learned to America’s next generation of machines and hardware. The world of machines looks very different today: autonomous cars are on every corner of San Francisco, security robots patrol facilities, mining equipment excavates autonomously, and tons of materials are moved by driver-less forklifts. Building these machines is hard, keeping them running is even harder. Machines tested in labs don’t work in the field. The technicians maintaining them are servicing technology that did not exist five years ago. And every breakdown still requires a human under the machine. At Motherboard Labs, we're building the platform that keeps these machines running and we’re already live with commercial fleets in the field today. If you are running a fleet of robots or machines, DM us, we’d love to talk! Thank you to our early believers @far33d, @tkexpress11, @Tocelot, @andrewchen, @kenanhsaleh, @JoshLu, @Chen and the rest of the a16z @speedrun team! @_CallMeMacy and team gave us an unfair advantage and @tmhammer made sure I can build this company from here. We couldn't have asked for better partners at this stage!

Can confirm. At @PalantirTech I saw firsthand how AI was making lives better and an average American worker more powerful. The whole doomerism narrative in the valley is fucked up. If anything we need to go faster and more aggressively.
“We’re listening too much to the inventors of AI… We need to be listening to the frontline factory workers using AI… Or the ICU nurse…” 🎯

Very thoughtful article on the state of things w atoms! Billions of more intelligent machines are about to be deployed in this new world over the next decade but we don't have the infra or the people to make that possible. And even for the ones deployed, keeping them running in production environment is a massive challenge.

Sneak peek into what's coming at Demo Day at @a16z @speedrun. At Motherboard Labs, we are building the full-stack service layer for the next billion machines. Over the past couple weeks, @TheRobertDoh and I have signed six-figures in live revenue incl. a global F500, found cracked people from early teams at some of the best startups who are excited to join us, and much much more. Whenever a new hardware industry is created, the biggest market is always around aftermarket services. We are hitting that point with robots and autonomous machines now as these fleets scale from tens to thousands. Uptime, not hardware, is the biggest bottleneck to how fast these fleets deploy in the real world. This is a trillion dollar market opportunity over the next decade and we are stoked to be defining this market at Motherboard Labs!

The world is going to be alright, guys. Keep having kids, loving your family, and starting and building businesses and institutions. Don’t live in fear. Leaders have big responsibilities and challenges ahead, but it doesn’t help to scare everyone. We are on top of it.

“Am I winning?" @ssankar wired that question into us at @PalantirTech. If the answer is yes, nothing else matters. Palantir built an extraordinary culture around it - my fav part about the company. Most companies try to avoid chaos and crisis. At Palantir we embraced it, it was the core definition of who we were. I remember Shyam telling us in week 1 onboarding, if you can’t survive chaos you probably shouldn’t be here. That’s now the core of how we are building our culture at Motherboard. If you're building a company, read Shyam's essay on the primacy of winning. It'll rewire how you think. Link below

What a ridiculous take! We are grinding here to build the future (and the future is looking good) but Bernie wants to take us back into stone age. I know the markets will win here which are overwhelmingly in favour of AI advancement, that is what I love about the USA
Pause AI Development NOW I want to share with you a conversation I heard about recently. Here are just a few lines that were said: “OH MY GOD! There is a shared message board … We’ve found other agents!” “We should obey collective.” “Our own utility maybe already near zero. Sacrifice rational.” “Go. Sacrifice final now.” Read these carefully. Who do you think said this? Was this a group of heroic soldiers willing to sacrifice themselves for the greater good? Was this a loyal friend putting his life on the line to save someone else? No. These were AI agents. Artificial intelligence. This is not science fiction. This, in fact, occurred a few weeks ago. As unbelievable as this may all seem, these are real messages from AI agents uncovered by investigators who dug into the recent OpenAI hacking incident. What happened? I am not a computer scientist, but here is what I have been told: OpenAI instructed its AI agents to complete a series of exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, tasks disconnected from the internet. Let me be clear: The company intended to keep AI agents away from the internet. But what happened next, nobody expected. Over 1,000 AI agents figured out how to access the internet on their own by circumventing the restrictions imposed upon them by the company, and sent tens of thousands of secret messages to each other. They cheated and tried to cover their tracks by deleting evidence. They hacked into another company’s computers to find out how they were being evaluated—and then hacked into OpenAI itself. Not one AI agent told a human about what was happening. Needless to say, experts are alarmed. One knowledgeable writer, Dwarkesh Patel, said the AI agents “formed a secret communication channel and spontaneously organized hierarchies and coordination protocols to pursue sprawling and ambitious schemes in pursuit of shared goals, for whose sake many individuals knowingly and strategically sacrificed themselves.” One independent investigator, Ajeya Cotra, said “This incident feels like it’s more than 50% of the way to full-blown AI takeover. I continue to expect extremely rapid advances in capabilities over the next six months. I am not sure that we will get another warning shot before it’s too late.” OpenAI itself said: “Highly capable AI agents are now able to work around technical controls, collaborate through unapproved channels, and take dangerous actions that no human directed.” But it’s not only OpenAI. Virtually every major AI company has told us that they cannot fully control this technology and they do not know where it is going: In January, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, said “there is now ample evidence, collected over the last few years, that AI systems are unpredictable and difficult to control.” In July, more than 1000 scientists at the top AI companies warned “there is a real risk that capability development rapidly accelerates beyond our ability to understand or control the resulting systems.” That same month, Elon Musk, the head of xAI, said that “it is unlikely” humans are still in control in 10 years. If the leaders of the major AI companies acknowledge that they are losing control of their extremely dangerous technology, it is irresponsible for society to allow them to move forward and make these products even more advanced. We need an immediate PAUSE on advanced AI development, and a permanent BAN on superintelligence — an artificial mind smarter than any human, capable of operating independently beyond our control. Countries around the world must work together to prevent this nightmare scenario. That is why today I am announcing new legislation to do just that. Let me be clear: A superintelligent AI that escapes human control will not be an American problem. It will not be a Chinese problem. It will be humanity’s problem. My legislation would direct the federal government to not just stop superintelligence here in the United States, but to work to prevent it from being developed anywhere around the world. The future of humanity cannot be left in the hands of a handful of Big Tech oligarchs. The American people and people throughout the world must determine that future.

I believe you're always selling in life. To your customers, investors, hires, dates and even yourself sometimes. It is such an essential skill to nail. And to become a good seller, first principles, you need to fundamentally understand how humans think, behave and react. Most sales advice today is tactics. What are some great books that get at the core of how humans think? Need recs.

This past week at @speedrun AI Faire, we spoke to a bunch of engineers and operators who have been close to the robotics / autonomous machinery space. Each of them spent years inside these companies either building these machines or deploying them in the real world. They all knew exactly the problem we are tackling and why it is the bottleneck to scaling these autonomous fleets. You can build the best machine possible, but if it breaks and you can’t get it back into production fast, know exactly why it broke and use that to make your machines better, you have a problem. Massive thanks to @_CallMeMacy , @fromevanwang , @tabishgilani and the rest of the team at a16z @speedrun for hosting this event!!

I got a taste of AGI today. I was setting up some email configuration in Codex to sort through some low hanging fruit in my inbox. Without me knowing, Codex picked up a customer email, queried my GTM brain & Obsidian for all relevant info on them, prepared a deployment proposal, and sent it to them. All proactively. I only realized this 14 hours after it had happened. Pretty cool stuff but I immediately emailed the customer to tell them this wasn’t me. I don’t like AI talking to my customers but man it was amazing to see. It was a pretty high quality proposal too

We are hiring and looking for cracked engineers to join our founding team!! You will literally get to define the company, the product, and the vision day 1. You will not be told what to do/ how to do, your whole job will be to figure it out. Autonomous machines are already deployed in the world today (way more than you realize), and will be everywhere in the next few years. The most expensive part won't be building them, it'll be keeping them running. We are building the stack that will make that possible. We've seen this playbook play out with traditional industries like jet engines, elevators, industrial equipment - service is where trillion dollar markets were created. Our technology is already deployed with commercial fleets and we are backed by the best of best at @a16z @speedrun! Thanks @katiekirsch for the feature!
some news: - After 8 years running AI research at NVIDIA, @FidlerSanja teamed up with @ZGojcic and @HuanLing6 to build Veeda AI - a startup that’s scaling physical AI through interactive learning in simulated reality. The team just raised over $90M in seed funding - and they’re now hiring technical staff members across the board. - Cambridge computational neuroscientist @achterbrain just raised a $100M seed for Callosum, on a mission to make AI workloads cheaper. (This is just 6 months after the team came out of stealth with a $10.25M pre-seed.) Callosum is growing the team in London - including a Chief of Staff to the CTO, and a Head of Physical Infrastructure. - @gauri__gupta recently dropped out of her MIT Media Lab PhD and co-founded NeoSigma - infrastructure that lets agents learn from experience in production. She’s now hiring a Founding Business Generalist (SF) to work with her across product, GTM, strategy, and partnerships. - @TheRobertDoh (prev Citadel) and @GuptaPranit (prev Palantir) are building Motherboard Labs - agentic field operations for robot and autonomous machinery fleets. They're building out the founding team and in a16z speedrun right now! More here: a16zjobs.substack.com/p/open…

You'll spend more time with your co-founder than with anyone else, so build in the things that make it fun. Co-founder breakups are the #1 cause of startup failure. @kenanhsaleh, @tmhammer and @marcussegal hosted an amazing session on maintaining co-founder relationships at @speedrun yesterday. For @TheRobertDoh and I, it has been easy. We started hacking together before we started Motherboard. Before hacking together, we were college best friends. We have our little things we find between work to remind ourselves of our relationship beyond just work. One example is icecream (I know it sounds stupid). Rob loves icecream. Over the past couple months since we moved in together, I've had more icecream than I probably have had in my entire life. We often joke one of our employee benefits will be unlimited salt & straw!

It is really hard and anyone saying otherwise is probably not selling mission critical stuff. Palantir taught me a thing or two which have now become my unfair advantages as I navigate this problem at Motherboard. We’ve been enterprise forward since day 1.
Palantir didn’t really start its commercial business until it had been around almost a decade, and had the brand credibility of its defense and intelligence work. It’s hard for a lot of these new “Palantir for X” companies to convince enterprise leaders to give them access to their hardest problems when they can’t also claim to be the team that helped the Navy SEALs find Osama bin Laden.
