India could be earning at least $1 trillion in tourist revenues. If only our government had the vision to let the private sector open up the country to tourism. And benefit from it. Anand is absolutely right. But our bureaucracy will never let our people thrive at scale. Everything has to be controlled by the bureaucracy and “regulated”. All of them want to cut in Indian growth. Most bureaucracies in most countries are pure parasites.
We have an 8000 year-old culture to showcase and yet while one city - Paris - attracts 25 million foreign tourists a year, an entire country - India - gets 11 million. We haven’t plucked the lowest-hanging fruit. We are watching it rot.
