I'm furious about
@andyburnham saying that Britain will develop a 'Global Code' and lead the world in AI. That is the exact opposite of the truth.
On the same day he said that, OpenAI held their DevDay and launched an important new product called 'Dots'.
Dots are rolling out to almost every country in the World apart from the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland.
This follows Meta choosing not to launch their latest agentic AI assistant in these regions as well.
Why? Neither company has said this but it's highly likely due to GDPR regulations which would make these persistent cloud based agentic AI assistants very risky for the AI companies.
I cannot stress what a major disadvantage this is for British and EU citizens.
These agents are cloud based, always on personal assistants that can book appointments, stay on the phone to get those rare GP appointments, renegotiate your bills, etc. They can project manage and aid entrepreneurs hugely.
At such an important time, when these technologies are moving fast and redefining industries on a daily basis, to be shut out of the best technology puts us all at a competitive disadvantage.
This is the equivalent of regions banning electricity when it was first invented. We will not recover from this. Nothing demonstrates our decline better than this.
To then have our leaders standing on stage and saying we're going to lead the world with a straight face articulates their utter incompetence and irrelevance.
On the same day, President Trump stood next to the CEOs of X, Meta, Google, Anthropic and others and said they'd been in talks with Xi in China.
Britain and the EU are an irrelevance and we're on track to be ever more so.
🚨 WATCH: Andy Burnham says he will create a "global code" for AI so Britain can "capture the benefits"
"We led the world's first industrial revolution from the Midlands and the North of England. So why can't we lead the next one? We can, and we will"
