From today we’re removing tax from your electricity bills. We are acting to give people some breathing space where we can, while we make the long-term changes needed to strengthen Britain’s resilience against global economic shocks.
From today, VAT is removed from household electricity bills, keeping the energy price cap around £45 a year lower than it would have been. Helping families keep more money in their pockets and give some breathing space. Find out what this means for you: orlo.uk/Pjroy

From the cost of living to cost of business, the lasting answer is stronger growth. I welcome today's upward GDP revision, which means the UK had the fastest G7 growth so far this year This is fragile with big global pressures, but we’ll keep driving for growth in every postcode
Today’s new GDP figures, revised in line with the 2026 Blue Book, show GDP grew 0.5% in Quarter 2 (April to June) 2026, up 0.1 percentage points from the previous estimate. Read more ➡️ ons.gov.uk/economy/grossdome…

A new National Care Service. Greater public control of water, energy, and housing. A National Commission on Electoral Reform. Strengthening our relationship with Europe. Reforming the education and welfare system. Today I set out a different path for Britain. You may disagree with some or all of what I have said today. But I have given you what you often say is missing from politics. Honesty, ideas and a clear direction for the country we all love. If you agree with enough of what I have said, get behind this plan. And get behind each other. It's time to draw a line. To move beyond a decade of drift and division. To bring a spirit of unity and positivity back to our country. To unlock the working-class aspiration that is still there in every postcode. To hope again.

If you don't have help from the bank of Mum and Dad, this is for you: This government is introducing the Your First Home scheme to help more young people buy their first home with a deposit of just 2.5%. That means less to save upfront, and lower monthly costs once you’ve got the keys. And this help is coming soon, with pre-registration set to open by the end of the year.

The war in the Middle East is impacting on inflation worldwide. Not just here at home. Restoring hope won’t happen overnight, but our early action to cut tax on electricity bills, cap bus fares and cut business rates for pubs, clubs and music venues is providing breathing space.

On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we remember the nearly 3,000 people who were killed, including 67 Britons. My thoughts are with all those who lost friends and family members that terrible day. Time may pass, but I know the grief is still felt just as deeply today. On this anniversary, we must remember that hatred and fear did not have the last word on 9/11. The terrorists sought to weaken and divide America, and everyone who believes in the values our countries share. But our response was clear: those who seek to destroy our way of life will never win. I saw that same defiance in Greater Manchester. When I was Mayor, Manchester was the victim of two horrific terrorist attacks. I will never forget the messages of support and friendship from people across America who knew better than anyone the suffering of our city. Some of the children of those killed in the 9/11 attacks wrote to the families of the people killed in Manchester, and they said this: We are you and you are us. We are one. We will never forget these terrible events, but we refuse to be defined by them. Terror still knocks on the door of democracy, but the United Kingdom and the United States stand together in memory of those we lost, and in defence of the values we cherish. We are you and you are us. And we will prevail.
