“For my part, I've always held the most important role of designers is fighting for the coherency, simplicity, and visual communication needed to humanize technology in a way that makes it work for people, not the other way around. New tools don't change this. New ways of working together do.”
design leaders from Anthropic, Google, Lovable, OpenAi, Microsoft AI, and more gathered in SF last week to discuss AI usage and its impact on their teams. I wrote up what I heard here: lukew.com/ff/entry.asp?2151

the broader point here: you manage agents, they manage agents, those manage more agents... chat threads break with that scale. in this demo: - a visual review of changes agents made - diagram of how the system works - arrange those views & more however you want
many ways to stay on top of many agents: new stacks UI in Intent makes seeing/knowing/steering large amounts of agents even easier.

new in Intent today: - stacks header controls - move stacks up, down, left or right with undo - search notes across all workspaces - token usage breakdowns by agent & model - view PDFs & download files, even from remote machines - plus design polish & more in release notes: intentapp.dev/docs#latest-re…

everybody moved from Terminal UI to combing coding tools with chat clients, but we don’t think dev tools have reached their final form yet.

but why.... - have we found the final form? - does everything trend toward average? - driven by the supply chain? - or does everyone just copy?

big part of it is the thick rounded edges. iPhone 18 ProMax for comparison.

skip the tools, just make the outcome. my personal AI starts with an answer vs. requiring a question & now makes use of background context for that answer from my corpus of 1,000s of articles 100s of videos & presentations, etc. try it out: lukew.com/ask?daily=2026-09-…

this is exactly why we have horizontal tabs for workspaces in intentapp.dev We've tried alll layouts and this one has felt the nicest in practice. We usually have a small set of things we're working on, and can tuck the rest away until we're ready.
Why horizontal tabs? Vertical is navigation. Organizational. Hierarchical. A tree. It's "history". You don't need it on screen all the time. Horizontal is the working set. The threads that are live. Always visible. Give it icons, colors, status. Context at a glance. In apps like ChatGPT, Claude Code or T3 Code, horizontal space is expensive. Tabs at the top let you tuck away the sidebar and leave more room for the right panel: preview, browser, code view. And you still see what's running, what's done, what needs your input.

getting to this info before required lots of scrolling and a tap. IF you knew it was down there. more visibility with the new design for I assume a common use case "when will it rain?"
