On Sept 1, 2016, Sakamoto and Alva Noto performed at Philip Johnson's Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut, to open Yayoi Kusama's installation there. Beforehand, Sakamoto walked the grounds with a recorder running. The leaves and grass under his feet became central to "walker." He conceived "async" as the soundtrack to an imaginary film by Andrei Tarkovsky, and tied this recording to scenes from "The Sacrifice."
"I think you can properly imagine the setting by hearing the soundscape."
Ryuichi Sakamoto, Resident Advisor, 2017
Other elements he recorded at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, in a 2016 exhibition of Harry Bertoia's Sonambient sculptures. He later acquired two sound sculptures by Harry's son, Val Bertoia, and played them at the album's live premiere at the Park Avenue Armory in 2017.

Both of Val Bertoia's sculptures are in "how many more times will I watch the full moon rise?" at THE GALLERY by Odo, now extended through Sunday, Oct 4th. The exhibition marks the release of "Music Sets You Free" (HarperVia), the first English edition of Sakamoto's autobiography.
"Ryuichi Sakamoto: CODA" (2017), Stephen Nomura Schible's film, which follows him from the aftermath of Fukushima through his 2014 cancer diagnosis and the making of "async," screens at Metrograph on Sunday, Sept 27th and Friday, Oct 2nd.
