Fourth Planet From the Sun
This storm occurred near the location of our Opportunity rover. Such storms sometimes presented challenges for the solar-powered explorer. In 2007, Opportunity captured images of the sky during a separate dust storm, seen here.
Imagine combining Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. That was about the size of the Mars dust storm seen by Hubble in 2005. It's the bright, orange-red portion near the center: go.nasa.gov/3TcLvhb

Speaking of dust storms, happy Martian New Year! 🎉 Today marks the beginning of the planet's year, which lasts 687 Earth days. This is Mars year 39 ⏤ the count began with a notable dust storm observed in 1956.
Replying to @esaspaceflight
📅 Mars year 1 started on 11 April 1955. But why? 🌪️ That date was chosen so that the 1956 global dust storm, the first well-documented one, falls at the very start of the count.

ALT This series of images captured by the Visual Monitoring Camera onboard ESA’s Mars Express covers about 70 minutes of motion as a dust storm moves along the north polar ice cap of Mars on 29 May 2019.

Searching for clues about Mars’ ancient past… right here on Earth. Our Perseverance rover found greenish "reduction spots" on Mars. On Earth, spots like these can be formed by microbes, so NASA scientists headed to Scotland to take a closer look. go.nasa.gov/4jtYMwe

Layered beauty 😍 The Arabia Terra region on Mars has deposits that preserve a record of the planet’s ancient climate. The rhythmic nature of the layers could be due to cyclic processes, such as dust storms, perhaps involving groundwater. 1/2

Two for two! 🙌 After the Viking 1 lander touched down on Mars in July 1976, America logged its second successful Mars landing 50 years ago today when Viking 2 arrived at Utopia Planitia. The lander captured images, analyzed soil, and completed experiments in search of life in this higher-latitude location more than 4000 miles away from Viking 1. 📷 Viking 2's first color image, Sept 5, 1976

The Curiosity rover has now been exploring the surface of Mars for more than 5000 Martian days! Each day on Mars, or "sol," is about 24.6 hours long. How did Curiosity and its team mark the occasion? By working, of course. 🪏 1/2

On Earth, solar eclipses happen when the Moon passes in front of the Sun as seen from the ground. On Mars, sometimes one of its moons does the same thing…but they’re too small to fully cover the Sun’s disc. Perseverance captured this look at Phobos transiting the Sun in 2024.
