Last week in quantum:
@StarkWareLtd cut the estimated cost of a quantum-safe Bitcoin transaction by 79%
A public optimization challenge reduced the estimated GPU cost of constructing a QSB transaction from about $320 to about $67 in one week.
QSB remains an emergency option for individual holders. StarkWare still sees a soft fork as the long-term path.
China’s post-quantum competition got stress-tested fast
China published 119 candidates for its next-generation commercial cryptography program.
Within three days, researchers logged 104 findings across 65 candidates. Many concerned code in the submitted implementations, but researchers also reported practical breaks in five designs. None is standardized or deployed.
EU supervisors added quantum to financial-system risk
The European Banking Authority, EIOPA, and ESMA warned that quantum computing could undermine cryptography securing transactions, communications, databases, and blockchains.
They also noted that the risk could arrive before quantum computing delivers widespread commercial value.
@infleqtion reported 30 logical qubits
Infleqtion ran a circuit entangling 30 logical qubits encoded in 80 physical atoms, with results about 1,000 times above a random baseline. The full paper is still to come.
These logical qubits detect errors and correct for lost atoms, a lighter layer of protection than the deep error correction an attack on Bitcoin's cryptography would require.
Germany advanced a €122 million trapped-ion proposal
A
@qudora_tech-led consortium was invited to submit a full proposal for NFQC-1k, a five-year project targeting at least 1,000 physical qubits and 50 logical qubits.
The proposed plan also includes a pilot production line for quantum processors, linking fault-tolerant hardware to domestic manufacturing.
Q-Day will test more than cryptography.
Can holders migrate before an emergency? Can new cryptography survive public review? Can quantum hardware sustain useful work? Can institutions move before the threat arrives?
That is what quantum readiness looks like in practice.
