As an addiction and behavioral health counselor, I’ll say it plainly: accountability is not optional just because trauma, mental illness, or other mitigating factors exist.
Context matters. Explanation matters. But if all you do is blame-shift, rationalize, minimize, and hand your responsibility to somebody else, you are not growing. You are avoiding growth.
And yes, I can tell a lot about a person by how hard they work to excuse their own behavior. That is not strength. That is not healing. That is an unhealthy pattern.
Real change sounds like: I did it. I own it. I need to do better.
If there is no ownership, no improvement, and no change, I’m not interested in the endless excuses. I don’t waste my time with anyone that does this.
Accountability is not cruelty. It is the doorway to growth. Walk through it or stop pretending you want to change.

Renee Nicole Good was a mother, a daughter, a wife, a neighbor, and a Minnesotan. Nine months ago, an ICE agent shot her, then allegedly refused a physician's offer of medical aid.
Her family deserves accountability and justice. It's long past time.
