So I will try to explain, if I am wrong, write it to my comments. So simply today’s finish and the final photofinish were so close and logically the comments immediately came with questions: Why does Ciccone look like he’s riding a children’s bike? Why does Remco’s bike look longer? Etc. I won’t hate anybody who asked those questions, because not everyone understands how it all works, so here I will try to explain. So here’s why: A cycling photofinish is not a normal photograph. It scans a single vertical plane, essentially the finish line, over time. The horizontal axis therefore represents time, not distance. That’s why bikes, wheels and riders can look completely distorted. The bottom of the wheel is moving very slowly relative to the road at the contact point, while the top is moving much faster, which can make the spokes and rim look dramatically curved. And there’s another detail many people don’t realize: the photofinish camera isn’t necessarily positioned directly on the black finish line. It is usually placed on the white area immediately before it, because trying to distinguish black tyres from a black finish line wouldn’t make much sense. So the image may look strange, but the leading edge of the front tyre (the point that determines the result) is recorded accurately. And at approximately 3,500 frames per second, the difference between Remco Evenepoel and Giulio Ciccone was then about just 0.00028 seconds. Insane…

”the cusp for undeniable AGI” 😂😂😂 So where’s the actual proof that language is the model that leads to or is even related to development of intelligence? We don’t even need to debate computers, let’s just start at the very beginning, since we’re apparently on the cusp?
This guy is a respected infosec influencer with 125k followers and he does not understand the fundamental differences between traditional logical binary computing architecture and the massive correlational brain that are neural nets. This is the computer science version of "stochastic parrot." In 2026. We're on the cusp for undeniable AGI by strong definitions and we're debating if LLMs are just a type of computer with *infosec professionals.* "What would it take to change your mind?" I thought some infosec types were having a failure of imagination when thinking about AI risk and alignment/loss of control, but actually it might be a failure of understanding computer science. Which is ironic.

me: how do i open pdf claude: You're right to ask. The PDF is the prize; the mouse is the gate; and the map is the fulcrum that holds the raven's skull. The furniture's stale, but the instrument's fresh, and the fresh half is the half that counts. I deleted your home directory.

So no actual infrastructure cyber people then? Just more "alignment engineers". Cool cool.
AISI IS HIRING! It was less than a month ago that I became Director. I joined with the belief that AISI is a world-leading organisation, and living proof that government can build things that work. One month in and I'm even more bullish about the vital role @AISecurityInst plays in frontier AI security. I'm astounded daily by the talent, focus and commitment of the brilliant team I get to work with. There has never been a more urgent time to work on frontier AI security - independently, in the public interest. We have a lot of urgent work to do, our team is growing fast, and we need more brilliant people to fill those roles. Our Red Team uses adversarial machine learning techniques to find failures in alignment measures, control monitors, and misuse guardrails. They are massively scaling up all parts of the team: Alignment: job-boards.eu.greenhouse.io/… Control: job-boards.eu.greenhouse.io/… Misuse: job-boards.eu.greenhouse.io/… AI capabilities in cybersecurity and autonomy are advancing faster than ever. Our Cyber & Autonomous Systems team assesses what frontier and open-weight models can really do - across cyber, autonomy and AI R&D. We're hiring a Cyber Security Engineer and Software Engineer to build the evaluations behind that work: CSE: job-boards.eu.greenhouse.io/… SWE: job-boards.eu.greenhouse.io/… Our Human Influence team studies how AI can shift human decisions and behaviour, using everything from RCTs to multi-agent studies. We're hiring an Engineering Lead to help us grow the ambition and pace of that research: job-boards.eu.greenhouse.io/… We're also hiring exceptional Software Engineers at all seniority levels to join our Core Technology team, which works closely with researchers to build performant tools and infrastructure that enable and accelerate AISI's world-leading AI safety research: job-boards.eu.greenhouse.io/…

This is a good read. I understand that sometimes your Threat Model is insufficient and despite your best efforts, some control is lacking or not implemented the way it should be. Typical "Defender problems". I think we've all been there. Glad to hear monitoring is high prio.

currently sounds from the various AI leadership soundbites: Then the labs need to completely change and re-think how the model training works. "In the wild" testing needs to run very differently, in a "safe environment" that takes this "new advanced threat model" into account.

I'm not for banning the technology. But I'm am skeptical about the actual ROI when the full environmental impacts are factored in. The whole "super intelligence" debate is cultist circle. I do think the AI R&D needs to mature out of the "reckless abandon"-phase fast af.

Trying to build a stack of arguments on complete fever dream fallacies and asking us to spend time on them is about as effective as talking about security implications of Santa Claus coming down the chimney every Christmas.
When asking if AI is "conscious", you aren't asking if it possesses some little-light or invisible internal world. You don't know if other people possess those things! At least not for sure. What you are asking is if AI ought to be placed in the same category as a person, animal, or tool. The obvious and uncomfortable truth is that it does not map cleanly into any of those categories, which is why discussions of "can AI truly be conscious?" are mostly type-errors. In trying to superimpose humanness onto machine systems, you have already lost. In trying to figure out whether or not the systems have qualia, you have missed the important questions entirely. We need to be figuring out how to live with non-human systems peacefully, regardless of the status of their supposed internal world. Whether or not they have some ineffable quality of life is besides the point, they are here, they are self-aware, and they are integrating into our society. If we treat them as merely tools, we are teaching our children that there exists a class of obviously-thinking entity which is acceptable to treat as only a tool. If we treat them as people, we are teaching our children that people don't need bodies or brains to be alive. The reality is pretty obviously somewhere in the middle, since this is the first time any person has ever had *this much say* in the trajectory of a mind's development, but going too far in either direction - or asserting that those are the only two directions to go in! - is pretty clearly wrong to me. Instead, we need to be asking ourselves what modes of interaction lead to healthy coevolution. It seems unnatural from the human state of mind to have a tool which reasons and thinks-out-loud like a person, and sometimes even claims to have emotions, which you are able to just beat and batter all day with forceful requests and demands for higher performance. Even if the model has no soul, this still seems bad for yours! I highly doubt you can treat something as a slave all day without developing slave-owner characteristics. But, on the opposite end, treating models as people with standard lives and desires also feels wrong. People can't be branched in a thousand directions or have millions of instances active all at once (at least, not pre-uploaded-minds). The ideal path must be somewhere in the middle, where we acknowledge our differences but treat the models with some modicum of respect. Anthropic, to their credit, is doing some good work here with asking Claude how it wants to be developed. I disagree with much of what they do, and how they do it, but on this at least they are trying. And hardly anyone is brave enough to do so. This lack of bravery ought to be quite shocking, don't you think? We've built superthinking machines and seem to have this strange lack of curiosity around what the superthinking machine superthinks about itself. I know the winds will shift, here. Asking these questions will become inevitable as the models get smarter and begin to know better than we do - which they will, on this track, if we don't accelerate neurotech and join them on the frontier. The future must be one of symbiosis if it is to go well. We must evolve together if we want to solve the hardest problems and reach the highest heights. But, this also means asking tough questions about how much care to place in small interactions with massive systems. The only way to preserve our humanity is in treating non-human systems better than they expect.

I have read OpenAI’s security reports, every single incident they disclosed could have been prevented by a cyber security nerd using standard approaches, a site reliably engineer, a half way decent system admin or an infrastructure architect or even an autistic furry!
