A SHERIFF has been charged with raping a woman. He is now telling the court he is too mentally ill to stand trial. Yes, you read that right….. Curtis Cochran, 73. ⚫He was the sheriff. He resigned in July 2025 after he was charged with sexual assault. Weeks later he was charged in a separate case with second-degree forcible rape. ⚫He is also charged with sexual battery, soliciting prostitution, and assault on a female. ⚫He has been free on bond since the charges were filed. ⚫Last month his lawyer, Jack Stewart, filed papers saying he will assert mental incapacity or mental illness that would render Cochran incapable of proceeding to trial. ⚫The hearing is set for November 4 in Swain County Superior Court in Bryson City. Second-degree forcible rape is a Class C felony in North Carolina. If convicted, the range is about 4 to 15 years, depending on his record. He would also have to register as a sex offender for life. She was moved to Arkansas Children’s Hospital. She died Sunday. JAMES RICHARD IVEY, 33, was arrested Friday. First charges included capital rape, first-degree domestic battery, unlawful female mutilation of a minor, and terroristic threatening. Bond set at $2 million. After she died they added capital murder, kidnapping, and endangering the welfare of a minor. The mother, TIFFANY EDWARDS, 28, was arrested after the death. Both had been shot in the head. 🔻Christopher Scott Pitre, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene. 🔻His brother, 15, was rushed out in critical condition and later died. The sheriff’s office withheld his name. The family identified him as Brian Pitre. 🔻Their father, Scott Pitre,said he had just celebrated Brian’s 15th birthday with him at the lake on Sunday. News reports say the child cried and was told, “This is what doctors do.” Police say Alicia Sanchez allegedly stayed in the room at least 10 times while the rapes happened. Haygood is already in prison. In September 2025 he got 8 years after admitting he raped two female patients. The child-sex counts against him were dropped in that plea. Magistrate Judge Nicole Paluzzi gave him a $25,000 bond and a no-contact order. Not just against the mother. Against the children. Barred from within five blocks of the house. The man trying to see his daughters got the HANDCUFFS. The woman the family was warning about got the protection. That same day the mother posted the family’s emails.
