Unfortunately I don't use closed source devices or software. Is it really that complicated to implement offline translation for all devices?
1
41
For now, yes. We could implement it via external translators but it's probably not what people want. Though maybe as opt in, via our new SMP service layer, it could be useful to translate messages one by one (even though it shares the message content with the service, it wouldn't leak IP and wouldn't create history of translations - so better than google translate). But probably we just have to wait a few years - maybe storage will be cheap again, with 1tb storage is an entry level devices, and on-device inference available.

Is there any chance that Simplex will implement message translation feature, so user could see every message automatically translated into selected language by local library?
2
160
We could do it on iOS that allows local translation from iOS 18 - there was open PR that never got completed (not automatic though, with interaction per message).

I doubt we can still fight this to be honest. They will just push it through. These people are corrupt. Your only way to avoid it now is grapheneOS phone, and high level privacy and decentralized apps + services. Normal privacy is completely over now. Why you can't use any other phone than grapheneOS pixel/motorola? Because client side scanning is build in on all others. Doesn't matter you use any encryption messenger. All your messages and all your media will be scanned. Have fun. The privacy people warned about this for years. But y'all "got nothing to hide" right? All those people will now get what they deserve.
STOP CHAT CONTROL 2.0. - What you should know: Tomorrow, 29 September, behind closed doors at the Council, the most draconian version of Chat Control 2.0 goes on the table. It is no longer only an intermediary reading all your private messages and cloud storage. It is a licence to search them for months, without suspicion against any individual. The leaked Presidency note to delegations (11956/26, 10 September) proposes "authorisation of search plans for a period of time rather than on a case-by-case basis" for private chats and emails. In plain terms: your messages, contacts, photos and cloud will be scanned under a state-issued licence for months, with no suspicion against you. The same note admits that under this regime "a high volume of reports generated do not lead to any operational outcome." The Council's Legal Service already warned this is general and indiscriminate surveillance, illegal under EU law. The @Europarl_EN mandate says the opposite: judicial authorisation, targeted to specific persons, no scanning licences. Tomorrow the pressure is on Parliament to fold. You remember the tricks used to push Chat Control 1.0 through and how @EPPGroup with @RobertaMetsola helped to push for it. So fasten your seat belt for what is coming tomorrow, and call or write to your MEP and your government now to reject Chat Control 2.0. as a whole! Remind them what this does to the privacy of every one of us. Under a search plan, every chat, photo or contact the scanner flags is stored by the provider and sent to a new EU agency, the EU Centre, which keeps it and passes it to police. Any state authority can then demand it, with a deadline and a fine for delay, and nobody has to check who is really behind the request, in case it is hacked or weaponised. That is exactly what happened at Revolut, and what keeps happening through abusive requests from authoritarian states, as we have reported for 13 years. In the Revolut case the hackers got access to a real state mailbox. Their requests came from an authentic certified email (PEC) account of an Italian Prefecture on the Interior Ministry's domain, with Postal Police protocol numbers, as European Investigation Orders in the name of the Milan prosecutor, for about five months. About 680 customers lost passports, selfies, home addresses, IBANs and full transaction histories. The files are being sold; hundreds of victims now fear kidnapping. No remedies exist as of now to protect against such attacks. Let's stop it before it is too late. Please repost.

Chat control 2.0 will probably install stuff on OS level on normal android. Signal won't stay in EU as many others when this becomes fact. And decentralized apps are not possible to mandate. @SimpleXChat could you elaborate what will happen and will your service keep working? Maybe just APK from site not on playstore?

It's pointless to speculate until the law is passed what if anything should happen. Overall, Chat Control targets centralized services, not infrastructure networks or p2p apps.

If an AI can clone your voice and your face, and make it easy to spoof your phone number and your email address, then phone numbers and email are dead. Right now, anyone with your number or email can target you. On SimpleX, there are no numbers or accounts. Nobody can contact you or impersonate someone you know unless you personally gave them a link. AI is breaking trust to traditional networks. SimpleX fixes it by removing the address book.

I agree but the average person can't comprehend the fact that your privacy is worth it and the other factor is that while simplex is more private then signal the UI still isn't as smooth making it harder to switch full time

Given a bit of time, SimpleX UX will be better, and everyone will want privacy, so AI clones can't reach them, by design. Multiply the today's number of AI agents online by 1,000x and you will see this future too. It's a matter of years.

“No accounts” ≠ “no data.” Your SMP code persists queue IDs, keys and timestamps on disk, retains backups of queue logs, and can leave encrypted message backups after a restart. Your policy says hosts may log IPs. A forwarded link proves no one’s identity. How exactly does SimpleX “fix” impersonation?

> “No accounts” ≠ “no data.” Yes of course. But so what? The absence of provider-controlled accounts puts people in control over their data, and relays only have metadata. > Your policy says hosts may log IPs. Yes, but only to prevent attacks, and it also says that it does not affect absolute majority of users. It also says that they can't share or sell data. Tor relays also can log IPs of all people who use them, and also can sell and share data, because there is no policy that limits what they can do with the data they collect. > A forwarded link proves no one’s identity. Link itself doesn't prove any identity, the trust is based on the knowledge where you got this link. Once connection is created, it cannot be intercepted or faked by providers. > How exactly does SimpleX “fix” impersonation? On SimpleX, nobody can replace your friend with whom you already have a connection. Every network dependent on email or phone numbers can do that.

True. But society is not ready for decentralization and anonymity, and we don't know if it will ever be.

Decentralization of communications is inevitable, and anonymity has nothing to do with it. It is about trust to the person or business you talk with. Only SimpleX network can provide it today, because trust does not depend on servers that deliver messages, and users are not reachable by default. Every network that makes all users reachable (all other networks, including anonymous) automatically exposes all users to attacks from AI clones of their family, friends, businesses, etc. simplex.chat/crowdfunding/#a…

@Telegram — when someone gets hacked, the bare minimum is an immediate response channel. No live chat. No urgent contact option. Just silence and a generic message. In 2026, this isn’t good enough. Sort it out. Can you actual help please or acknowledge that you are helping?

We’ve actually looked closely at the SimpleX Network and we really respect what you’ve built. 👀 But there’s one architectural property we’re not willing to give up. Zerion has no messaging relays, no message queues, no directory and no server-side message store. Each device publishes its own Tor v3 onion service, and online communication runs between the two devices through Tor’s rendezvous architecture. SimpleX makes a different trade-off: SMP relays and private routing give you asynchronous delivery and a very interesting metadata model. That’s a strong design but adopting it as Zerion’s messaging transport would mean giving up our serverless model. So replacing Tor with SMP isn’t on our roadmap. 😉 Different architecture. Different threat model. Same mission. But we’ll keep watching what you build and maybe there’s something we can surprise each other with in 4.0 👀🤝

Please read this blog.torproject.org/announci… It is not secure to use Tor v3 service addresses as persistent user addresses for messaging - they need to be regularly rotated by default.

Device linking is indeed a known social engineering exploit. With Signal, you can at least see when another device is linked, and can unlink it. In Session, you can't even see which other devices access the profile, and can't unlink them. In SimpleX we only implemented temporary connection, there is no linking yet. When there will be, it will be secure and auditable. It is a hard problem no messenger solved securely so far. simplex.chat/faq/#why-cant-i…

Many ask why PQC matters when quantum tech isn't here yet. Because of "Harvest Now, Decrypt Later." Intel agencies capture your data today to decrypt it retrospectively later. Switching then is too late. This is why @SimpleXChat, with Quantum-Resistant E2EE, is Tier 1. 🔒

WhatsApp and Signal both still require a phone number to create an account, which ties both to your real identity the moment you sign up. SimpleX Chat is an open-source messenger built specifically to remove that requirement: no phone number, no username, no persistent user ID of any kind, anywhere in the system. Instead of an account tied to you, SimpleX assigns each individual conversation its own private message queue. There's no central directory an attacker, a company, or a subpoena could query to map out who talks to whom, because the app itself has no concept of a user identity to hand over in the first place. Fully end-to-end encrypted, with group chats, file transfer, voice and video calls, and disappearing messages, all without the metadata trail that phone-number-based messengers generate by design. It's a newer, smaller project than Signal, so the network effect isn't there yet, but the architecture solves a problem Signal structurally can't: identity-free messaging, not just encrypted messaging. github.com/simplex-chat/simp… #privacy

Freshness is the safety boundary. Restore two devices from one backup and let both send before either syncs. The old branch should not silently merge or overwrite the newer ratchet. Recovery should require renegotiation, not pretend the conversation identity remained continuous.

yes, that's how it works - people will see that encryption is out of sync if old backups are restored and has to be confirmed.

Signal is finally cutting the cord with phone numbers. Its new Signal Login lets you create an account without handing over a phone number, a major change for a messenger built around privacy, but historically tied to one of the strongest links to your real-world identity. There’s a catch, though: a small fee, which introduces more privacy limitations to be aware of...

Well spoken. And thanks for the follow. I hope Simplex will become the new normal in place of what Signal now is. It will be for me. I'll keep moving further towards more "extreme" privacy matters to keep ahead of the growing surveillance.
