I used GPT-6 Astra to break an unsolved cipher to one of Napoleon's generals that had gone unread for 217 years. What makes this impressive isn't actually the codebreaking, but that Astra completed the entire multi-modal workflow in ~6 hours from a single image and goal. 1/6🧵

College sports have been on a wild trip: <2001: Salary cap of $0 >2021: No salary cap after the Supreme Court ruled 9-0 against it Now Congress wants to impose a salary cap, but without a players union to negotiate against wsj.com/sports/protect-colle…

We're dodging a bullet here with this rushed legislation.
House Republican leadership says there’s no chance they are coming back for the senate NIL bill. They dont think they can get enough members back, it’s not a priority of theirs 5 weeks before election and they don’t even think this bill can get through rules.

This is a pretty good idea
Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/NmmAzhf

The officiating in college football this year has been incredibly bad. First the extra play in Michigan, and now this illegal Tennessee onside kick.
This is illegal on a kickoff. The ball must be kicked on the restraining line, the 35 yard line here. There is an exception for safety kicks, but not a kickoff.

In the last 5 Texas polls @GregAbbott_TX is ahead in 3, and @GinaHinojosaTX is ahead in 2, all within the margin of error. No polls give @GregAbbott_TX above 50%. Texas is a true tossup which is wild for a state that hasn't elected a Democrat in 3 decades! realclearpolling.com/polls/g…

Houston is the only major city in the US that has no zoning. That means we don't ration housing, making housing incredibly cheap. When you make housing cheap, every service related expense also becomes cheap. It's a natural inflation deterrent.
Something unusual is happening with inflation in Houston. Houston CPI inflation is just 1.3%, compared with 3.4% nationally — a 2.1 percentage-point gap. Dallas is at 2.9%. So what is driving Houston’s unusually low inflation? 🧵

I thought I saw a lot of political ads during the Texas/UTSA football game last week, but it looks like we're going to get "full saturation" until November. Living in a purple state is really weird, but at least our local media stations are getting rich...
🚨☀️AM: NEWS: TEXAS PAC, the Senate GOP-linked group, could reach $200M in spending in Texas. GOP private polls mirror the public polls and have Paxton down. SLF “hopes and expects that other partners will help carry the load during the final stretch in Texas.” AKA they want Trump to get off the sidelines and spend tens of millions for Paxton, trumps’s hand picked candidate in the lone star state. link.punchbowl.news/click/47…

The Democrats have a better chance of sweeping Texas than Trump had in 2016. Texas with a Democratic Senator, Governor, and House is a very real possibility. Given the concentration of power in the Governor/Executive, would be a dramatic change.
New @NBCNews poll of Texas Hispanic voters shows a sharp swing to Dems since going for Trump in 2024. Still, Dems are below Beto's 2018 level of 64% Among Hispanic voters Talarico 54% Paxton 36% Undecided 10% Hinojosa 52% Abbott 39% Undecided 9% nbcnews.com/politics/2026-el…

College football literally fixed it's core problems, and now has record viewership, revenue, and engagement. Why would we go back? *Players get paid *Players can transfer *Playoffs leading to a clear champion *2 Mega-conferences
WOW had no idea Chris Simms had it in him like this 🔥….no lies detected

Good morning from the @HoustonTexans game. We started with an Asian dragon dance, followed by a Punjabi bhangra routine, and then introduced the players with a mariachi band. I enjoyed all of this with a @trillburgers. Houston is the best. #Texans

You know what really pisses me off? When I’m zoomed all the way in on a road in Google Maps and it won’t show me the fucking road name, I have to scroll around until I find a label somewhere else. If I’m zoomed in on the road, just show me the name of the road @googlemaps

Between the Ted Cruz infomercial last week and whatever this is, ESPN has turned @CollegeGameDay into a political platform which will make half of Americans really happy and the other half tune out.
Pat McAfee: "We certainly appreciate the hell out of the American military. And if you're not the United States of America and you hear that sound, your ass better run." Rece Davis: "That's the one thing the two sides here can agree on, for sure."

We truly live in amazing times.
GPT-6 Astra deciphered a 1918 German radio transmission that, to my knowledge, has never been deciphered before. The message below translates to: "EIN ENGLISCHER KREUZER EINLIEG X SEWASTOPOL X S4STEN X EIN GESCHWADER DER X ALLIIERTEN FOLGT 26STEN X" or, in English: "AN ENGLISH CRUISER ARRIVED AT SEVASTOPOL ON THE ?4TH AN ALLIED SQUADRON FOLLOWS ON THE 26TH" Astra even double-checked its work by determining that an English cruiser, HMS Canterbury, reported its arrival in Sevastopol on November 24, 1918 and the arrival of an allied squadron on November 26, 1918. This message is one of the ~20 WWI German radio messages that appear as one of the entries in the scienceblogs.de list of top 50 unsolved ciphers (scienceblogs.de/klausis-kryp…). A minor, but really cool result!

"Forbes 30 under 30" has become a euphemism for con artist
Wait they fired the founder/CEO and then in the 33 hours before he regained control, signed $4M payoffs to each other? Are we sure these guys weren’t Forbes 30 under 30?

It's kind of wild how NIMBYism is such a disastrous policy that it can overwhelm a million good ones.
In 1974, California and Texas had roughly the same installed power capacity (30 GW and 34 GW). Today, Texas has 243 GW, and California has 113. Watch where they split.
