The University of Maryland's Division of Research: A National Research Leader Located at the Center of the Nation's Federal Research Region. RTs≠endorsement

College Park, MD
University of Maryland (@UofMaryland) and state officials on Tuesday opened a home for @Microsoft's newest quantum research center, international quantum firms and UMD startups that is designed to anchor Maryland's emerging quantum industry. The Discovery Center, a three-story building in Discovery District Maryland, includes space for cutting-edge labs and offices, with fiber connectivity through the Mid-Atlantic Crossroads, the high-bandwidth research network linking UMD to the region's quantum infrastructure. The building additionally serves as headquarters for the Capital of Quantum, a landmark public-private initiative that aims to unlock $1 billion in investments and cement Maryland’s position as a leader in the increasingly vital field. The initiative seeks to connect industry, academia, government and investors to grow companies, expand testbeds and build a skilled quantum workforce. today.umd.edu/at-quantum-dis…

The UMD Applied Research Lab for Intelligence & Security (ARLIS) at the University of Maryland is advancing Maryland’s Capital of Quantum initiative through a new workforce development program, Maryland Quantum Network for Experiential Learning, Workforce Upskilling, and Skills Development (NEXUS). The program prepares talent for careers across Maryland’s growing quantum community and builds a mission-ready workforce that strengthens state, national, and global security. For ARLIS, developing that workforce is also a national security imperative. As quantum technologies move from research toward real-world applications, government and national security organizations will need professionals who can work across emerging technology, applied research, and secure mission environments. arlis.umd.edu/about/news-eve…

One of the most significant challenges in cancer treatment today is precisely targeting tumors while minimizing damage to healthy tissues. Although medicine has made great advances and improved outcomes for patients, many still experience significant side effects. Huang Chiao (Joe) Huang, a University of Maryland associate professor of bioengineering and Fischell Family Distinguished Professor, is working on a potential answer: photodynamic therapy (PDT), a treatment that uses light to selectively activate a photosensitive drug within tumors, avoiding toxicity in healthy tissues and improving patients’ quality of life. His research is advancing toward clinical reality at the Edward and Jennifer St. John Center for Translational Engineering and Medicine (CTEM) in the University of Maryland BioPark in Baltimore, which celebrated its formal dedication with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 8. today.umd.edu/ribbon-cutting…

Where have all the apples gone? Few things are more satisfying than biting into a juicy peach or crisp apple plucked right from the tree—but before you head out to local farms this fall, don’t be surprised if you’re not finding the same bountiful branches as years past. A spring frost devastated Maryland crops. A University of Maryland Extension fruit expert, David Myers, and Professor Emeritus Chris Walsh share what to expect at pick-your-own orchards and beyond. today.umd.edu/where-have-all…

Two University of Maryland researchers have received seed funding for an interdisciplinary project that combines natural language processing and sociolinguistics to examine how people understand and evaluate AI in everyday life. Supported by a one-year, $100,000 grant from the Institute for Trustworthy AI in Law & Society (@trails_ai), the project brings together Julia Mendelsohn, an assistant professor @INFOCollegeUMD with an appointment in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (@umiacs), and Charlotte Vaughn, an associate research professor in the Language Science Center. The researchers are addressing a fundamental challenge in modern AI: understanding how the public perceives—and decides whether to trust—the technology. umiacs.umd.edu/news-events/n…

Despite recent technological advances and the global rise of artificial intelligence, too much time continues to pass between the production of important agricultural data and the time at which that data would have been most useful to farmers. Steered by multiple Kenyan government institutions, including the Ministry of Agriculture, the University of Maryland-led @NASA Harvest program aims to close that gap by creating a system through which it can use satellite images and AI to consistently produce its own, in-season agricultural data products that government officials, farmers, agribusinesses and insurers can depend and act on in a more timely way. The ADAPT project is supported by the @gatesfoundation and an In-Kind Gift from @Microsoft AI for Good Lab. lnkd.in/evuNPEW3
