Texas declares Diesel Emergency (joining Louisiana) Gov. Abbott signed an emergency declaration regarding the price of diesel: “Texas agriculture and freight run on diesel,” Abbott wrote in a statement. “Record prices put both industries at risk and raise costs for every Texas family. Farmers and truckers can now use dyed diesel on Texas roads, and fuel, crop, and timber loads can move at a higher weight. These steps cut costs on the farm, on the road and at the store.” What's odd is that the tax is not waived. Milk can't sit. Bulk tanks last 24-48 hours. Then, the milk gets DUMPED. During COVID, dairies were dumping milk (this is not an AI image!). That was a temporary issue -- negative demand shock when restaurants/schools closed. This is a STRUCTURAL issue: Diesel north of $6.50, and haulers on 3–5% margins, means deliveries become uneconomic. Rates were locked in advance. Trucks stop running, and dairies are in crisis. Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry issued an executive order giving farmers and loggers a tax exemption on diesel that is used for off-road equipment like tractors, skidders and irrigation pumps — but not normally on fuel for highway use. Landry’s order declares a state of emergency and allows farmers and timber harvesters to use the dyed, tax-free diesel in highway vehicles through Oct. 22. “We’re not going to sit on the sidelines while Louisiana farmers are paying record prices to harvest the crops that feed our families and support our economy,” Landry said in a statement.“ With these escalated fuel prices, it’s not a cure-all, but it’s a definite recognition of some of the dire straits we’re going through trying to bring in these Louisiana crops at this time,” said Louisiana Farm Bureau President Richard Fontenot. I think they learned a lot during COVID about how many people: - will believe anything - will comply with anything (whether they believe or not!) - will not comply - will actively resist; what forms that resistance takes, and how it can be managed/mitigated I think they have accounted for some non-compliance accordingly. But as long as there is a critical mass sleepwalking to the slaughter, their plans can achieve some measure of success. That is why I always say it is critical to spread the word. And with people feeling the pain of diesel right now -- today, actively -- we should all be having these conversations!
