Olena and her 13 children lived in Vovchansk, Ukraine, and kept cows, pigs, chickens, and a thriving garden. As the security situation there worsened and Russian attacks became more frequent, they were forced to flee, upending their lives as they moved to a small apartment in Kharkiv. One of the few items Olena brought was her grandmother's recipe book, which she and her children still use. Although they left their garden and animals behind, they are still able to participate in the cultural tradition of preserving produce using WCK's preservation kits.
Our WCK
#ChefsForUkraine preservation program is supporting families like Olena's as they jar vegetables for the winter, a beloved annual tradition in Ukraine. The children help wash and cut vegetables, prepare ingredients, and fill the jars. Activities like these help families maintain a sense of normalcy and stay close to each other and their culture, even during periods of intense change and uncertainty.
