a lot of court portraiture esp from the 16th century and earlier feels kind of indistinct, like the idealised image always takes precedence over the real person. but there’s one fat bastard who’s the exception. there was no idealising him

you’d get married at 24, have 6 kids (4 of whom would survive to adulthood), go to the market, do silly dances and eat pies on holidays, and die at 56 of an infection. is that so bad??

One thing these Africans forgot to mention is the blood. Scotland is named after an invading Gaelic people called the Scoti. A people bound by blood. I actually descend from the Barbour family, but a distinct branch from the one that formed the English brand which has 19th century roots in Galloway/Ayrshire, while mine come from Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire and left Ayrshire much earlier in the 17th century. These roots matter. The peoples of these British Isles are not an idea, they are families, clans, blood.
