The Department of War has confirmed the Navy's F/A-XX contract award to Boeing, officially announcing what Breaking Defense reported today, citing sources, just hours earlier. The contract is valued at more than $20 billion for full-scale development, covering multiple test aircraft for ground, airworthiness, systems, and weapons integration testing.
Part of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program, F/A-XX will augment and eventually replace the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler starting in the 2030s, operating alongside the carrier variant F-35C. The Navy says it will also be interoperable with Collaborative Combat Aircraft, increasing the capability of every CCA it teams with.
"The F/A-XX is a critical pillar in our commitment to maintaining peace through strength," said Michael Duffey, Under Secretary of War for Acquisition and Sustainment, adding the program will help "deter aggression, project undisputed power, and secure absolute air superiority." Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao called it "a generational leap in air superiority."
The award makes Boeing the sole U.S. producer of sixth-generation fighters, having already won the Air Force's F-47 contract in March 2025, effectively locking Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman out of that category for now. Lockheed continues building the fifth-generation F-35.
