Real-world data collection Contributors use their smartphones to record requested locations and environments. This creates a way to gather spatial information without depending exclusively on dedicated mapping fleets. 2. Privacy comes first Faces and licence plates can be blurred on-device before the data leaves the phone. That matters when building a network around real-world environments where privacy cannot be an afterthought. 3. Turning captures into useful spatial data Raw video is only the starting point. VanGrid can reconstruct captures into 3D outputs that organisations can use, including formats such as point clouds and Gaussian splats. 4. Verification and provenance A useful dataset needs more than an impressive visual. Buyers also need confidence in where the data came from and when it was captured. VanGrid uses capture fingerprints and onchain records to help establish that provenance, with Base and Ethereum Attestation Service infrastructure playing a role in verification. 5. Axis Signal, Update 2. The most common pushback I hear on Axis Robotics is simple. Simulation data is not real world data, so how much does any of this actually matter for robots operating outside a controlled environment. It is a fair question, and I do not think it should be dismissed. But it misunderstands what Axis is actually building. Axis is not claiming simulation replaces real world deployment. It is proving that crowdsourced simulation data can dramatically reduce how much expensive real world data is needed. In the Booster Robotics case study, a model trained on Axis simulation data hit 87.5% real world success using only 30 real robot demonstrations, compared to 37.5% success with none of that simulation prior. That is not a replacement for real world testing, that is a massive reduction in the cost of getting there. And right now, Axis is running live validation combining their simulation data with real world datasets like DROID, specifically to test how well that transfer holds up under scrutiny, not just claim it does.
