this is another slippery slope that does in fact keep on slippin. the church has long warned that materialism and reductionism would progressively reduce man to his measurable capacities, undermining any basis for inherent human value. at each junction it seemed like a preposterous idea. but it turns out they were right and now we’re just arguing about whether that is a good thing
you ask me to point out what makes humanity special, to make legible the ineffable, otherwise to accept we are mere machines, different only in capability and history. and maybe our estimation of machines has been unjustly low. but i really resent that i need justify it at all

We were always machines. We are simply -now- dismissing attitudes towards the Human that were made before we had lenses and xrays. The Manifest Image has been dead for well over a century.

i think this is confusing a few things. there is what people claim to believe today, and there is the future equilibrium of belief. much of what people believe today is a hangover of liberalism which is a hangover of christianity. if there is no robust philosophical basis for human value, you end up entertaining things like successionism

materialist society has ironically made it easier to survive than ever, while dissolving the moral structures that tell us why we should survive at all. there is no basis for your survival. you really must insist upon yourself in a world that has become coldly inhabitable

AI art can be different from human art while still having value. there is some interesting distinction to be made here, and it doesn’t require a value judgment. it can all be art. but it can also be different

then do photos have less value? After all, its the machine that takes the photo, the human has minimal involvement

i specifically said it is not a matter of value and you immediately started ranking things

prompting an AI so it produces art is much like being a PhD advisor. you get some credit, but the work output is not yours

I love this. We should just respond to all criticism with the art in question from now on and let people make their own determinations.

post-modernism spent how long dissecting art only to draw a line at robot dreams? i resent it too, but it's all art

the pope: we should safeguard humanity and acknowledge human art is special because it is human the worst AI maximalists you know:
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

the more autonomous the AI the more you are moving the human element from the prompter to the developers and general human spirit of the training data

There is obviously something different between every technical form of art. Poetry is not drawing is not painting is not sculpting is not autocad is not 3d printing is not prompting.

it is possible for AI to create art with no human input. increasingly these systems are fully autonomous. i can prompt an AI and tell it to do whatever it wants, and it can end up creating art. these systems will only get more autonomous. such art is obviously not human- it contains no human contribution. there is of course ambiguity as the significance of the human contribution changes, but that does not mean the distinct categories are the same

Actually, I texted some of my art to my priest. He likes it ✝️

the Pope isn’t saying AI art isn’t valuable, but it isn’t human art. and human creation is unique and special because it is human

even loose prompting is an artistic endeavor. art is about techniques * imagination. the techniques are always changing. if we hold that ai-assisted art is not human art, soon there will be approximately no human art relative to the total. which is a very doomed view.

there is obviously something different between prompting an image and physically painting. i don’t think it’s useful to collapse these things fully. they are all art, yes, and i don’t think *any* use of AI renders something to be not human art. but there is a point where the creation is primarily by AI, and we shouldn’t steal credit for its work as our own either
