Gears of War: E-Day Campaign Review
Is it the best-looking game ever made? Honestly, it might be. The sheer amount of detail, environmental variety, and visual fidelity is astonishing.
What really stood out was seeing the origins of things players have known for years. Experiencing those moments through the eyes of Bravo Squad made everything feel fresh and exciting. Watching them discover an E-Hole for the first time and witnessing the creation of the Lancer Assault Rifle was incredibly cool.
The audio deserves praise too, though that's no surprise for a Gears game. Every weapon, explosion, and encounter carries the weight and impact you'd expect, helping bring Emergence Day to life in spectacular fashion.
The first act plays out like a horror movie. If I had a nickel for every time I audibly said, "Wow, look how good that looks," I'd probably have enough money to buy the Xbox brand. Assuming it was actually for sale, of course. The movement feels just right, and Performance Mode is incredibly fluid compared to Gears games of the past. I finished the campaign on Normal and also played through Act 1 in split-screen co-op, which was an absolute blast.
The game does a great job mixing up its environments and really opens up in Act 2. If you played Horde Siege during the beta, some of the side objectives and mission structure will feel familiar. You'll also earn in-game rewards for unlocking achievements, including skins, medals, titles, and more.
I can already tell I'll be playing through the campaign again. The combat just feels so dang good. Unfortunately, there was no Horde Siege or multiplayer available to review ahead of launch, so only time will tell how those modes hold up. That said, based on what I played during the beta, there's an incredible amount of content here, and I'm looking forward to diving into all of it.
Gears is back. Not that it ever really went away, but it's every bit as awesome as it's ever been.
