So happy to finally share the news that my book, “A History of Uncertainty: Science between the Ottoman Empire and Early Modern Europe,” will be out in Spring 2027 by the University of Pittsburgh Press. I still can't believe it's now beyond my hands and on its way to meeting its readers.

Carl Sagan on books ✍️ "What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you’re inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years."

In 1954, Albert Einstein was so upset by the Oppenheimer hearing and the McCarthy era attacks on the loyalty of scientists, that he said that if he were just starting out he'd become a plumber or peddler, instead of a physicist. He soon got an invitation to join a plumbing firm!

A new paper in Nature reports that a team genetically altered mice to make them "apallial" (missing a cortex). And then, postnatally, transferred organoids derived from human neural cells into that space. Three months later the cortex was 91.9% human-derived neural cells by volume. While this opens up new avenues for neurological disease modeling and drug discovery, it also raises important ethical questions. nature.com/articles/s41586-0…
