I've been praising Linux on the desktop for years until i found out how deeply bad pro audio production is on it. It's extremely bad. Only QEMU, win10 VM, and USB passthrough might possibly salvage it and prevent me from having to run win10 as the main OS. 0/10

to the designers who feel behind with ai: i've been working on it for years, in companies of every size. and i can say this with confidence: nobody has this figured out yet. not the loud influencers. not the big companies. not the small ai startups. you're not late. it’s still early for everyone. this one matters though. you can't ignore it. it’s here to stay at some capacity. but you don't have to rush it either. just start somewhere. start playing with it. you'll catch up. we all will. 🙏

Anubis is unreasonably effective at flinging off web scrapers. We installed Anubis on our most AI-scraper prone server. It runs in conjunction with our fail2ban configuration. Scraper count ( averages ): No protection: >60,000 Fail2ban + ASN blocks: 6,000 Fail2ban + ASN blocks + Anubis: 500 There's a doppleganger site which also exposes it's metrics, which i use as a benchmark. They have a fairly well dialed in Cloudflare setup lately. Their average is 1,100. Performance and memory usage are quite good; fail2ban actually has much worse CPU consumption ( thanks Python ) It's kind of a pain in the ass to setup.. but it is heavy duty.

Ah, look.. design people are finally starting to take to human in the loop processes too :)
I was really worried about AI, you know. Because I’m young and I chose design as a career, it made me think a lot about whether I could actually make a living from design. Eventually, I just accepted it. I’m not worried about AI anymore. I’m going to keep creating until the industry is completely replaced. I love creating designs, and I’ll continue doing it because it gives me energy. I don’t want AI to replace creativity. I want to create with the help of AI, not have AI create everything for me.

Designers using AI to code. Developers using AI to design. Beautiful. Now everyone's mediocre at each other's job.

We wrote a batch jpeg/png/gif compressor that watches folders and auto-compresses new/altered ones. It's web application agnostic, too. We finally ran it on a substantial dataset and did extensive visual lookover of the result. You need to get to 4x magnification before noticing any difference in before/after, very rare is the image that you notice a difference in at 3x, or a slight shift in tone. cjpegli, pngquant, and gifsicle are badass. The other part of the secret sauce is conditional rescaling, and not replacing an image unless we save at least 7% bytes. Next, we will run it through some wordpress sites and see how it compares against the best free plugins. If we also see such good results in wordpress, then the logical thing is to package it up for open source; too good to not give away!

I'll be honest, 70% of this loss is rescaling some 20 megapixel camera upload to a 1440p maximum, the other 30% is big brain magic in the fancy compressors

I have read OpenAI’s security reports, every single incident they disclosed could have been prevented by a cyber security nerd using standard approaches, a site reliably engineer, a half way decent system admin or an infrastructure architect or even an autistic furry!

I love Linux, but man, the audio experience is pretty bad as a newbie to it. By default, the pulseaudio audio driver has variable latency and lots of it; totally unusable. JACK is the equivalent of ASIO and works well with super low latency, and was the only audio driver i could get working with midi. This involves launching two programs via terminal, then hooking in the MIDI interface via some funny GUI. Then you can start your DAW. Gemini helped me put together a bash script to automate this, but man!

It's been known that: - any data you put in can/will end up in the training data - that data can be reconstituted by anyone ..therefore you should not use a commercial AI system for anything remotely confidential But AI uploading your data somewhere else, that's new

Working, good professional software engineers will continue writing code by hand. No matter how much AI they use. AI coding agents are great tools, but they’re not the right tool for every job. Being a good software engineer means knowing when they’re the right tool and when they’re not. Knowing when it’s more efficient to write the code by hand and when it’s not. Hat tip to Petar Dambovaliev who summed this up well: “The more precise you need to be the more natural language text you need to write to describe the same programming concept. So at some point it is actually faster to write the code than to try to explain to an LLM what the code should do. It is a spectrum and you should be at any moment be able to go from one to the other.”
