Before it was ever a real card, this Meowth only existed inside a Game Boy. It debuted in the 1998 TCG game, later got printed as a holo in 2000, and slipped into the game's box instead of a sealed pack. Which is exactly why the gem rate is a brutal 1.16%. 73 PSA 10s / 6,268 PSA graded A card that escaped a video game and became a grail. 2000 POKEMON PROMO BLACK STAR GAME BOY #10 MEOWTH-HOLO #PokemonTCGGB #PokemonTCG #RetroGaming

If you asked me for the single card that captures spooky Pokemon, I wouldn't hesitate. A tiny bit of light, surrounded by the dark, Gengar right there behind the friendliest face in the franchise. You even get a little peek of ekans and parasect in the background. High pop and modern, sure. Iconic nonetheless. Available in pull.fun packs.

One of my favorite little details in the 1998 Game Boy TCG game: the cartridge exclusive booster packs. Colosseum, Evolution, Mystery, Laboratory. Each with its own art and its own series of cards, and none of them ever existed as a real product. Pixel art way ahead of its time. #PokemonTCGGB #PokemonTCG #RetroGaming

This week I want to pay tribute to one of the most overlooked things in Pok茅mon history. In 1998, the actual Pok茅mon TCG shipped as a Game Boy game. Not the RPG everyone remembers, the card game itself, real rules and all, in your pocket. Seven days on a hidden gem. Let's go. 馃憞 #PokemonTCG #PTCG #RetroGaming

Figured I'd start this account with a card that means a lot to me. Sabrina's Gengar, 1999, Japanese Gym 2. The original graveyard art, before the crosses got scrubbed for the Western release. One of my all-time favorites.

Here's the detail worth zooming in on. Gengar is standing in a graveyard, and every headstone is marked with a cross.

What the West got instead: no graveyard, no crosses, just Gengar floating in an empty purple void. And it wasn't only this card. Pok茅mon quietly scrubbed crosses and other religious symbols across the whole Western localization. Sabrina's Gengar is just the most beautiful casualty. They tried to bury it. It became iconic instead.
