OMG it's not good at preserving code optimisations - it's been adding piles of unnecessary buffer clearing and setting.

It's also added per frame shader compilation - enough to make Chrome judder on this on a modern Mac. In discussions it says it thought this was better than the fixed upfront design I asked it to port . . .
