pianist, organist, harpsichordist, computer programmer

Just got the piano tuned - the first part of Couperin's La Couperin to celebrate :) I have proper microphones now but still need some cables and to get everything set up. I'll start recording full pieces soon!

I just can't take stuff like "blazing fast JSON serialiser" seriously. Why are you using JSON? Hell, sometimes you can ask why are you serialising?
So the fastest JSON serializer for .NET now is developed by CAPCOM as part of their game engine that powers Resident Evil / Biohazard I did not see that coming lol github.com/CAPCOM-TD-OSS/RED…

How do you get so high on your own supply that you think you can convince the Pope your computer is alive
There are some people who don’t realize “is the Pope Catholic” is a rhetorical question. nytimes.com/2026/09/29/us/an…

I dream of a new world. User interfaces that entirely remove the concept of resizing. Desktop monitors are all fixed 3:2 aspect ratios and available in one fixed physical ANSI-standard size. Windows cannot be resized by the user, the size is prescribed by the program at compile time -- this way, WYSADTIWYG: What you see at design time is what you get. You can design interfaces freely, with great liberty knowing that they will never be resized, as if it is a physical object like a piece of paper. No phones or iPads to design for and they do not exist. Keyboards have dedicated F1-F24 function keys (tilted forward). Touchscreens are an instant impossibility. No animation API in the operating system. Standardized action buttons on the keyboard (CONFIRM/REJECT). Nothing floats, everything is anchored to the window frame. Input latency is sub-millisecond. UI shows the state of important metrics and program features at all times, visible and never hidden. Nothing slides. Nothing moves. No emojis, only ascii-128 (no utf-8). Scrolling ok with scroll bar visible at all times. There is no concept of notifications. Computer state in a dedicated area on the monitor, always visible, cannot be hidden. No HDR in UI. No markdown.

A B&B host a friend and I stayed with, a lady in her late sixties, spoke of how she had once casually referred to someone as being from the Black Country (of course referring to the area of the West Midlands) in front of an African female guest, who took great offence.
kind of a sad interaction w an older woman in passing today: me: it got hot again! her: yeah! i guess they call this indian summer me: *spacing out* oh yeah huh her: i guess what i said is really inappropriate 1/

And the experience of using them is truly awful, aesthetically. The way they write English is disgusting. The way they write code is disgusting. Confidently presenting false statements as true is extra disgusting.

Suppose that A is a computably enumerable set that is undecidable. Of course every instance of n∈A is provable in PA, since we verify that the algorithm proceeded as it did. Nevertheless, for any consistent theory extending (or interpreting) PA, such as ZFC or ZFC plus large cardinals, there will be infinitely many instances of n∉A that are not provable in the theory, for otherwise we could decide A by searching for proofs. The point being that proofs of n∉A in a consistent theory extending PA are reliable, since upon finding the proof we couldn't afterward find that n∈A, since this would reveal inconsistency in the theory. If theory is furthermore sound for existential assertions, this means that n∈A will be often independent of the theory.

Ice cream aside, check out the UI. Everything upfront and flat. No fucking menus and animations. Modern SaaS with 1/100th of the information just doesn’t stand a chance.
Based and additivepilled. Let me drop some ice cream alpha. This is my base recipe which everything is adapted from.

My logic professor told us that if we affirmed the consequent, we'd fail the test. And I did fail the test. So I guess I affirmed the consequent.

I'm not entirely sure how to navigate the trend of technical design docs being vibed. The information density, the odd writing tone, and the standardized presentation style across all the vibed docs generated from the same model are making technical artifacts human un-readable

Reducing or eliminating consequences for irresponsible behavior punishes responsible people the same way that inflation punishes savers. It’s like a natural law. You need to understand it as intrinsic to the project.

Imagine writing War and Peace and creating a half dozen characters that are literally more alive than most people you’ll ever meet. Must make you feel like a God. It’s no wonder Tolstoy thought he could rewrite the Gospels.

Another great and funny Scarlatti sonata, K. 487. A highlight is this comical sequence that just keeps going way longer (and with way wider intervals) than it has any right to. Also features a rare harpsichord glissando at the end piped.video/QqtQEoYOrYc

I absolutely hate the way Claude (Fable and Opus) writes - it’s so full of itself, so fake-eloquent without saying anything, so know-it-all, presenting the simplest insights in a repulsively smug tone - and it seems impossible to get rid of all these Claude-isms it produces even with strict global instructions. Can’t stand any more “load-bearing assumptions”, any sentences that end with “and that’s the one point that lands with me”, generally any short sentences that start with “And” and a complete over-use of references to “the one XYZ”. It feels like AI for people who have never learned how to communicate succinctly, and who constantly have the need to feel smarter than everyone around them (hint: they’re not smarter, they’re just insecure). ChatGPT, Grok and Kimi are miles ahead on producing a more natural communication style. The actual analysis, the automations and the artifacts might (often) be better - but Claude just feels so repulsively unlikeable to interact with.

As I keep saying there are two mental models of programming: the retarded model of "a sequence of magic incantations that might have 'bugs' in it" and the correct model of "a formal object we can reason about and ensure works by construction". People with model 1 produce garbage.
Replying to @looking5452
It's a whole new world. I've had a couple save state bugs, and I just paste in the error message or write a short prompt and they're fixed in minutes. Refactoring and bug fixes are effectively costless.
