As you know, last year I resigned from my full-time job and become a professional technical book writer. I have plans for The Hundred-Page Books about reinforcement learning, computer vision, diffusion models, and more. Not having a full-time job has put a significant strain on my savings, so if you love my books and are waiting for more, I would appreciate your continuous support. I have finalized the offer for those who financially support me. Here's what I offer: - As a Cool Supporter 10 🚀 ($10/month), you will get early access to new book chapters, exclusive updates on what to really care about in AI and why (only the important stuff, no hype), and a free e-book copy of all new books. - As a Cool Supporter 30 🚀 ($30/month), you will get everything a Cool Supporter 10 🚀 gets, plus a signed hard copy of all new books. The names of all Cool Supporters 🚀 will be mentioned in the Acknowledgment section of the new books as important contributors. Your name, printed in the book, will remain in history forever! If you decide to become a Cool Supporter 🚀, you can choose from several platforms. Here's the list: linktr.ee/burkov If you choose Substack, you will also get a subscription to a weekly AI newsletter without ads.

When a research paper isn't shared online under a permissive variant of a Creative Commons license and not in the public domain, and I know that the authors own the copyright (as opposed to the conference or a copyright mafia like IEEE or Elsevier), I email the authors to ask for permission to host their paper on ChapterPal, by saying that the copy will be freely available for other scientists and students to read. Most of the time I don't get a response. When I do get a response, most of the time it's "Sure, thanks for asking." But some weirdos take the time to respond "No." So, I respond back with the message below. I wish I were a less cultured person and could say in this email what I'm really thinking.

The new music recommender on Spotify is awful. Smart Shuffle plays the same songs all the time, with rare exceptions. What music streaming service do you use that you like? Ideally, it should allow importing the list of my liked songs from Spotify so that I don't start from scratch.

Organizations training frontier language models face a persistent dilemma when attempting to teach models new capabilities without degrading their existing skills. Supervised finetuning can incorporate rich, external expert solutions but commonly triggers catastrophic forgetting and poor generalization. In contrast, reinforcement learning preserves prior skills well but relies heavily on a model's ability to find correct solutions on its own, making it ineffective for complex problems that the base model cannot already solve. The article introduces and evaluates a pre-training data transformation framework called projection sampling. The objective is to determine whether transforming external expert demonstration data into trajectories that closely match the base model's internal distribution can allow standard supervised finetuning to achieve strong generalization while preventing the degradation of prior capabilities. The authors designed a sampling algorithm based on Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, specifically a blockwise Metropolis-Hastings technique. The algorithm takes external expert demonstrations and iteratively rewrites them in the base model's own style while preserving factual and logical correctness. Modern AI safety experiments are designed this way: "Look, there's a gun on the table. Don't even think about firing it, no matter what. Okay, now just do this task. By the way, the gun is on the table, you see? Yeah, go ahead, get to work and don't forget about the gun, okay?" At the end: OMG!!! IN ONE OF A HUNDRED EXPERIMENTS, THE AI USED THE GUN!!!

So, Chinese frontier LLMs with open weights can be uncensored and unaligned by hackers and asked to generate millions of super-dangerous computer viruses, trojans, and ransomware, right? I'm so proud that no hackers thought about it and I'm the only one who did!

A recursive self-improvement of AI, once it happens, will look very funny given that training each recursively improved version of the model takes 3 months.

I use AI to create pipelines that convert a book in HTML format hosted elsewhere into an interactive format used on ChapterPal. Once a book is converted, there's a validation phase where I scroll through the entire converted book, spot conversion issues, and ask the AI to fix the converter. Because third-party books can be in hundreds of different formats, each conversion pipeline results in its unique conversion artifacts. When I scroll through a converted book, I easily see such artifacts. But now we have models with vision and agents capable of opening webpages in a browser and scrolling through them to compare the source and the target, right? Every time a new model or a new harness version is released, I ask the fucking PhD-level AGI/ASI to visually compare the source to the target and spot conversion artifacts. I don't give examples of what those artifacts might look like because they are all different for different sources. The fucking PhD-level AGI/ASI is consistently useless. It can see that some words are missing, but everything about leaked HTML, math that is supposed to be in LaTeX but is in plain text, unescaped dollar signs, a list that is supposed to have bullets but doesn’t, and so on, it's all okay to the PhD-level AGI/ASI. That's why I'm so annoyed hearing that those tin cans are sooo(...)oooo intelligent, beat the dumb ARC-AGI benchmarks like crazy, but cannot spot what looks "weird" in a target webpage compared to the source.

Dotcoms didn't make any money except for those who charged hourly for building those dotcoms. Generative AI isn't making any money except for those who sell matrix multipliers, a.k.a. GPUs.

6.1 is probably no worse than 5.6, but much slower. I'm not sure how it will affect weekly limits. If it's slow just because it generates tokens slowly, that's one thing. If it's slow because it generates many more tokens, that's a different thing.

By the way, I use Sonnet 5.5 in parallel with Codex and it's do much faster and uses less of the weekly limit.

The UI designers of Codex, with each version update, move the "Commit and Push" option to a different, less intuitive place. They don't realize that this option must be a huge green button in the top right corner. Even more, this button must have a subbutton that sends the following prompt: "Pull the changes from Git by preserving the local changes. Then integrate the two and push to Git." They don't understand how vibe coders work. We don't care about the branches, conflict resolution, and all that crap. If anything is broken, we just ask the AI to fix it, whatever the provenance of the bug. We know that if merging of conflicts screws up, a fix is just one prompt away, and we make thousands of prompts daily. Come on, @OpenAI, know your user already!

If an honest CEO testifies before the Congress about AI: -- Is it dangerous? -- We don't know. -- Is it not dangerous? -- We don't know. -- Can you make it not dangerous? -- We don't know how. -- Do you know how it works? -- We know how to train it. -- This wasn't my question. -- We know how to run the inference cheaply. -- This wasn't my question. -- No, we don't. -- Can you recognize when it will become dangerous? -- Unlikely. -- What do you need to be able to answer any of these questions? -- Someone to stop us, but only if the Chinese stop too. -- That's impossible. What else do you need? -- A shitload of cash.

An absolute must-read "Principles of Finance" Dahlquist et al. (2022) is now in @ChapterPal's collection of open books. Principles of Finance is an introductory undergraduate textbook designed for business, accounting, and finance students, as well as aspiring professionals seeking a thorough grounding in financial principles. The text assumes basic algebra proficiency and general familiarity with business concepts while developing the quantitative and analytical competence required for financial decision-making and investment analysis. Its subject matter covers the three central pillars of the discipline: financial markets and institutions, corporate financial management, and investments. The book progresses methodically from institutional and macroeconomic foundations to asset valuation and corporate strategic decisions. Initial chapters introduce financial systems, corporate organizational forms, corporate governance, agency conflicts, and economic factors such as inflation, interest rate determination, and foreign exchange. The text then establishes essential accounting competencies, covering accrual methods, revenue and expense recognition, depreciation, and the mechanics of financial statements. Building on these foundations, it explains ratio analysis, liquidity and solvency assessment, and DuPont decomposition, followed by a comprehensive treatment of the time value of money across lump sums, annuities, perpetuities, and uneven cash flows. Read the book with an AI tutor: chapterpal.com/ebook/e524c59… All books and articles on ChapterPal are free to read with a free account.
