People say that dogs are a man’s best friend, but I think tobacco provides close competition on this front.
Of all the plant spirits I’ve communed with, tobaccos is the most human like.
When I hang out with the spirit of tobacco, I feel like I’m hanging out with a very wise older brother.
When I invoke tobacco in icaros, I use the Shipibo phrase “wetsa metsa” - beautiful brother.
A Shipibo maestro I worked with used to call tobacco the King of the Jungle.
It was tobacco, some Shipibo say, that originally taught them how to communicate with other plants.
He also told them which plants they could use for healing which illnesses.
Some of them say that it was tobacco that taught them about how to make ayahuasca.
Tobacco is also used in Shipibo culture as a gift to other plants - when wanting to request something from a plant eg its leaves, they will blow tobacco on it first as an offering.
It actually makes sense scientifically as tobacco is a natural insecticide and one very easily absorbed by most plants.
Tobacco smoke is also used to clean and protect spaces, which also makes sense given its ability to kill pathogens.
Unfortunately, in modern times we’ve come into an imbalanced relationship with tobacco.
When I asked the spirit of tobacco about this myself, he told me that coming into right relationship with him is similar to coming into right relationship with our other non-human best friend - dogs.
Treat me with with disrespect, tobacco told me, and I will be like a wild and dangerous wolf to you - one with sharp teeth.
Treat me with reverence and care, and I’ll become like a little puppy - a warm and protective companion.
I only ever use tobacco for shamanic purposes - to spiritually clean and protect myself and the spaces I use for ceremony.
Tobacco smoke seems to fill and guard space in a way that makes it hard for negative spirits to occupy that space.
A problem for me is that it interferes with my sleep and dreams.
If it weren’t for that and other potential health impacts then I’d probably smoke it all the time just because it’s such a fun spirit to hang out with.
But if I did that, I expect my relationship to tobacco would come out of balance.
So, in some ways, the negative health consequences of tobacco are protective - they remind is to stay in right relationship to it, and alert us when we are out of right relationship.
Many of life’s pains and sufferings are like this actually.
The wolf’s sharp teeth remind us to respect him and protect us from our own tendency to consume things beyond the degree that is natural and balanced.
Do you smoke tobacco?
If not:
If smoking tobacco had zero negative health consequences, would you smoke?
