Foundation First! - sitereliability.in (write) - ratsniper.online ( fun) - DevOps | SRE | Cloud | System Design

I’m locking in for the next 90 days. 12 years of Linux, Datacenter , DevOps, SRE, Cloud & Architecture — I’m going back through all of it and refreshing everything from the ground up. I’m going to share the whole journey here — notes, learnings, experiments, mistakes, and everything in between. If you’re into infra, cloud, DevOps, SRE, or just love tech, keep an eye on this profile. This is going to be one hell of a journey - That’s my promise.

We were doing aggressive AWS cost optimisation in my company, Today I saw an AWS account in our org paying a noticeable amount just because S3 was configured with SSE-KMS even though there was no real compliance requirement for it. In that case, SSE-S3 would have been enough. Let me explain it with an example: 1B KMS requests/month SSE-S3 → $0 additional encryption cost SSE-KMS → ~$3,000/month additional KMS cost SSE-KMS is great when you need tighter key control, auditing, or compliance. Otherwise, don’t pay for complexity you don’t need. - Monk Mode - Day 1/90

These are the two different API gateway pattern where we need CDN features. 1. User → Edge-Optimized API Gateway → backend 2. User → Your CloudFront → Regional API Gateway → backend Choose option 1, if you want simple integrated CDN layer with api gateway, but if you want to control entire CDN layer configurations then prefer option 2. - Monk Mode — Day 1/90

I built a cool little game — check it out. 😄 ratsniper.online/ Play, climb the leaderboard, and if you make it into the Top 10, you can list your product, startup, or X profile.

Yesterday in a casual meeting one of the fresher was making fun of some old code because the logic wasn’t very optimised!!!! Fair enough, improving old code is always good. But I think newer engineers sometimes don’t realise the pain of writing and debugging this stuff in the pre-AI days. where we used to refer official docs and stackoverflow discussions to stitch each piece together. Today you can throw almost any code into an AI and it’ll suggest 10 better ways to write it. That doesn’t mean the original developer was bad or the code was sloppy. Every piece of old code has some context behind it 🙂

Once we start building something alone then office works get bored easily, it's like we can't drop it as it's the financial backbone but difficult to work on boring stuff 🫤

Peer review getting harder nowadays, due to AI agent code. ( we can use agent to do the review but some case I would prefer manual review) Some terraform codebases now look like full-blown application code, layers of abstractions and complex logic just to save a few lines. I’ll choose simplicity over complexity every time.

Low free memory in Linux isn’t always a problem - Usually kernel aggressively uses unused RAM for filesystem cache if actual ram usage is higher then it release those cache and application can use it. so next time don't panic after seeing free -h output.

We used to treat servers like pets, Today we treat them like cattle - replaceable, reproducible and disposable. Now, same intresting shift is happening in coding side too. It was carefully written and mainted years, but with ai coding agents it slowly moving towards cattle culture.

Linux store entire metadata of the filesystem in "super block" , if that superblock corrept then linux loose any knowledge about the file system ( but there is 5 or 6 backup copies to other disk locations to prevent the corruption and make it easy for recovery) - in past I recovered the file system from one of this backup superblock by mounting it using "bs" option in mount. Old days now it's era of immutable OS, no one go indepth troubleshooting.

I'm not a big fan of kubernetes, I feel it's bring unnecessary complications and cost for most of the projects. I love solutions like ECS.

Someone builds something cool, and suddenly everyone wants to copy it - even the domain name. There are so many “I Hate PDF” clones all over the internet now. I hate this. Build something new, clones . Or at least pick a different domain, yaar #ihatepdf

CPU: 20% | Memory: 45% | Disk: 55% But everything suddenly becomes painfully slow. What do you check next? One underrated answer: iostat -xz 1 Low CPU utilization doesn’t mean the system isn’t bottlenecked. Storage latency, I/O queueing, or a slow underlying volume can stall the entire application while CPU sits mostly idle.
