NEW Astonishing growth of Chinese car market share in the UK, revealed in just released SMMT figures, albeit it should not be surprising, as I wrote three years ago. Just under 1 in 4 cars sold in the key month in September are Chinese brands/ built, just under 1 in 5 year to date, with Jaecoo 7 selling nearly 11k, top monthly seller (for second time after March and no 2 Year to date). In a market that is overall up 10% YTD and 12% in September vs last year, Chinese market share is up over 100% to 18%, 319k (YTD) and 24%, 84k (Sept alone). NB - am counting MG, BYD, Denza, Jaecoo, Chery, Omoda, Polestar, Smart, Lepas, Geely, Leapmotor, Changan, Xpeng, Aion, GWM, Skywell, Maxus.

By all accounts the “Temu Land Rover” nickname has been rather helpful for Jaecoo…. £37k price point - for the 7 hybrid, about half the price of its competitors

Interesting escalation: Treasury Select Committee chair Labour MP Meg Hillier writes to the head of HMRC querying whether they have asked for the full unredacted Premier League judgment on Man City and asked if tax authorities are “seized of the importance” and public interest in the case

DWP savings costing published re triple lock New policy will save on cash terms £15bn a year by 2039-40, £50bn by 2049-50 In real terms… £11bn by 39-40, £30bn a year by 49-50

Obviously these are long range forecasts, but I think it shows the upfront aim of the policy - it’s not going to do much direct savings in the coming years, but it starts to address some of the long term worrying fiscal trajectory challenges identified eg in the OBR fiscal risk report, and pretty much for the first time shows the Govt willing to take political pain for that what Lord O Neill called “a golden opportunity”… if the costs of a more limited care service are more like half the £18bn figure some have estimated, there is room to tie long term plans together. That said the savings number is highly contingent on whatever happens to prices and earnings, hard enough to predict over half a decade let alone a few. Clearly if the full NCS kicks in much more quickly there is a gap, that would require tax rises or much faster growth going into the new Parliament.

NEW PM tells @bbcnickrobinson country should consider all options on relations with EU including “going all the way” rejoining, customs union and single market in new Parliament, as country can not face another decade of “drift”. Summit now happening “later this year”.

Here’s the quote… on another day would have been the lead headline coming out of the speech… He also confirmed that the postponed summit would happen “this year” some in the EU were beginning to doubt appetite even for the reset, but now the PM is suggesting going much further x.lingyaoai.com/bbcr4today/status/2105…
"Brexit has caused more harm than good." PM Andy Burnham says rejoining the EU is among 'different options' he will look at to reshape the UK's long-term relationship with Europe.

One wonders if the Canada associate EU membership talk in the middle of which there was a dash by Mark Carney to meet his fellow Evertonian around the G7 table (at a Toffees match), might have had an impact…. There were some echoes of Carney’s long term Canada plan in ydays speech.

UK Q2 GDP growth revised up to 0.5% by ONS. So top growth in G7 in q1, second in q2 to Canada, overall fastest growth of g7 economies so far in 2026. GDP per capita also revised up to 0.5% growth. Definitely defying the suggestion that the Iran war would hit UK hardest.

PM seems to signal consideration of rejoining single market at least: “Brexit hasn’t given us control” Lost control over the economy and over immigration …. Reset steps “not enough”… we need a “long term path” on our relationship with our closest market… Need “a higher level of cooperation” with EU… At a summit “later this year” will lay out options for the nation.

Clarification: The direct annual earnings link goes, but actually he says it will keep pace with earnings over time… there have been some reform plans suggesting this be spread out over a decade. Awaiting details.

Triple lock inspiration?
Replying to @HelenMiller_IFS
For those who want protection against inflation - better to use an Australian style "smoothed earnings link" - protects pensioner incomes when inflation > average earnings growth, but without the ratchet effect set out here: ifs.org.uk/publications/pens…

Here’s the clip of me asking the Chancellor John Healey earlier this month about whether the triple lock promise could be changed in a new Parliament (September 7th, interview in Coventry), that I talked about this morning and a fortnight ago on Newscast:

NEW PM to @bbclaurak ahead of Labour conference goes all in on a new national care service criticising “cowardice” on this issue over decades, suggests a free at point of use system based on upcoming Louise Casey study to save money on health and eventually the NHS itself, says he will put to public at the next General Election. He says it will cost less than £18bn a year estimated. One critical issue is whether this promise includes bed and board. He also says his speech on Tuesday we will hear that he is willing to make tough decisions.

Former Cabinet minister Darren Jones floats idea of an NCS helping older people, so therefore a rethink of triple lock could be seen as fair… as we discussed on Newscast last week. The timing of what the PM said is interesting - he said the care service was for the next Parliament and election… does raise a question about triple lock in next Parliament. I note the Chancellor did not answer this precise question when I interviewed him in Coventry earlier this month.
