Every contraceptive option has a tradeoff. Birth control suppresses ovulation entirely and replaces your natural hormones with synthetic progestins. The copper IUD avoids synthetic hormones by creating localized inflammation in the endometrium to prevent implantation, which can elevate copper levels relative to zinc. The withdrawal method has a 20% typical-use failure rate. FAMM avoids synthetic hormones and inflammation, but it requires you to be diligent about tracking temps and mucus. There is no zero-cost option. Decide which tradeoff you are willing to manage.

Mega-dosing zinc to improve their sperm health is a bad idea. Men will mega-dose pills assuming that more zinc will increase sperm count, but a study of 25,915 men found an inverted U-shaped relationship where the highest zinc group had the lowest progressive motility. Excessive zinc is toxic to sperm cells. Oysters and red meat beat megadose zinc pills.

If you notice dark skin patches on the back of your neck, under your armpits, or on your knuckles, they are one of the earliest signs of insulin resistance. The clinical name for this is acanthosis nigricans. The dark patches can show up years before your doc tells you that you're diabetic. When circulating insulin stays high, it overstimulates certain skin cell receptors. That stimulation thickens and increases pigmentation in skin folds. If you have these patches, you need to get your fasting insulin and fasting glucose tested. You can calculate your HOMA-IR using the formula (fasting insulin × fasting glucose) / 405. It should be < 1. The skin patches will fade as your insulin sensitivity improves, so you have a visible marker of progress you can watch.

Insulin rising after carbs is normal. No rise means something is broken. People have become obsessed with zero blood sugar spikes. That is fighting physiology. A meal should raise glucose. The problem is a huge spike and crash, or glucose that stays elevated all day. Restrict ultra-processed candy. Do not lump fruit, fresh juice, milk sugars, and homemade cookies in with cocaine.
Because all sugar is unhealthy. Sugar without fiber—spike your blood sugar. You then release insulin to level it out, and insulin is the main hormone thet stores into fat cells. Not to mention sugar activate the same reward circuit in the brain as cocaine does. Kids dont need it.

A child who eats a whole food diet is unlikely to be addicted to sugar. Even if I put a bowl of candy in front of my kids, they will have 1 or 2, maybe, then they don't want it anymore. I leave packs of gummy bears on the counter and they are in the mood for them maybe 3 times a week? When the brain and body have real food, junk food becomes a lot less appealing.
I fundamentally disagree that kids should not have sugar. Candy all day is bad. But making sugar the enemy? Silly. Sugar is glucose and fructose. Kids' brains NEED glucose while they grow. If a child wants real fruit juice or a baked good with sugar in it, why are we treating that like a toxin? I see this a lot in crunchy mom circles. And seriously, let the kid have cake on their birthday instead of a sugar-free version. It is one day. It is not poisoning them.

fwiw, oat milk is not healthy. Neither is living on skim milk. In the Nurses' Health Study, women eating 1+ servings of full fat dairy a day had a 27% lower risk of anovulatory infertility. Women eating 2+ servings of low fat dairy a day had an 85% higher risk. Whole milk is a God-made food your hormones love. Oat milk is starch water with seed oil. Pour the whole milk. Eat the full fat yogurt. Stop being afraid of dairy fat.

I am a summer gal for sure, but winter makes it so much easier to hit bedtime goals. When daylight lasts until 8 or 9 PM, going to bed early feels like fighting Mother Nature. I mean, we are in a way. Winter forces us to naturally wind things down sooner, so I can sleep earlier. Looking forward to it. Never thought I'd say that about winter.

Clinics market egg freezing as an insurance policy. In reality, it is much closer to a lottery ticket. An egg is a delicate single cell with high water content. Many do not survive the thaw. The ones that survive still have to fertilize, develop into blastocysts, and test normal before you ever reach a transfer. Freezing eggs does not guarantee a baby. If egg freezing is your strategy, understand the math and how many eggs you need for the highest chances of success. A lot of women only learn that math years later when its too late.

A 41 year old client came to us after multiple failed IVF cycles where doctors told her that her eggs were too old. She conceived naturally after 6 months of metabolic repair and targeted nutrition. An egg takes 90-100 days to develop before ovulation. The cellular environment during that time directly impacts egg quality. Clinics often treat egg quality as permanent, but you can absolutely change the environment your follicles grow in. Commit to at least 90 days of doing serious metabolic damage repair before you schedule another IVF cycle. You'd be surprised.

Yesterday my kids spent 2 full hours on a tiny 10x10 metal platform. It was sitting in shallow, algae-filled water along the walking trail with turtles swimming around. Most people walked right past it without giving it a second glance. If I had been alone, I probably would have watched the turtles for 5 minutes and kept walking. My kids insisted on staying right there until our time at the park was up. We ended up having the best afternoon just watching turtles poke their heads out of the water and a random duck. It is amazing how much life and wonder children bring back to the simple things adults completely overlook.

A lot of "unexplained" infertility never gets a serious look at cervical mucus. We've known for decades that mucus decides whether sperm get through. This paper just measured it properly. Particle tracking showed thicker mucus slowed sperm and thinner mucus sped them up, in the same samples. The biology isn't new. Science is just confirming it. This is also why we are meticulous about cervical mucus at Ferta.

Paul does honey. I do OJ. I craved OJ before bed when I was pregnant and the habit stuck with me. I know it breaks the "no fluids" before bed rule but it works for me.
how to sleep through the night: -2 tablespoons honey + pinch of salt before bed (this was critical for me) -10 min sunlight first thing in am (no sunglasses!) -no blue light, no flickering light 2 hours before bed (no phones, no LED lights etc, red light in house etc.) -majority of fluids in first 10 hours of the day, minimize after that -adequate calories during the day (from high quality foods) + reasonable macros (0.8 g protein/lb goal body weight, ~25-30%+ fat cals, carbohydrates based on activity level- at least 150g daily) -magnesium prior to sleep.

Foods that instantly calm my nervous system: - Beef - Bananas - Potatoes - Honey - Whole milk - Full fat yogurt - Dark chocolate - Silky smooth peanut butter Most of these make sense. They're nutrient dense, filling AND great fuel. Peanut butter is the odd one. When I was undereating, I ate it by the spoonful every day without knowing how much. My body was so hungry for anything dense that it went looking for it. I think it still remembers.

Most fertility advice tells you to just try for a year before running any labs. This is so backwards. Run labs BEFORE you started trying. Better yet, get the baseline in your late 20s before you're ready to even have kids. We've had women do this at Ferta where they spend 3-4 months optimizing in their 20s so that if and when they are ready to have babies, they can get started right away. I'm so tired of hearing OBs basically tell their patients to just keep trying completely blind with no data at all. The advice makes no sense.

Honestly surprised how many people agree with this. I never considered that women might feel awkward giving birth with their man around. For me it felt completely natural. We had our babies at home and my husband was in and out. Sometimes I wanted space to be alone, which is normal. But when the baby was close, I wanted him right there, and my kids watched too. Every woman is different though, I guess.
I don’t think men should watch you give birth. They’ll inevitably see you differently, no matter what they say. It weirds them out a little. Go on a hunting trip with the boys or something.

So is a mom who gets to decide what’s best for her and her family. Blocked for being annoying.

A man can get a fever, feel fine a week later, and still have a terrible semen analysis a month or 2 after that. The testes have to stay cooler than the body to make healthy sperm. A fever heats up the sperm that are forming. Some die, some lose their swimming ability, and some end up with damaged DNA. Those damaged sperm keep moving through production and will show up weeks later. In one study, men with a high fever for 3+ days saw their sperm count drop to under 10% of normal 3-6 weeks afterward. It took months to recover. If his result is bad and he was sick in the last 3 months, retest before you make any big decisions.
