ZERO FEAR MATH
This is the reason - x - = +
MULTI-PLAY #4
- × - Negatives Subtracted from Zero
In ⁻3 × –4 the superscript ⁻ symbol in ⁻3 means 3 negatives or negative 3
The – symbol in –4 means subtract 4 times
It’s red 🟥for positive and black ⬛for negative
To play ⁻3 × –4 you subtract 3 negatives from ZERO 4 times
So, let's subtract 3 ⬛ negatives from ZERO 4 times
We can’t subtract something from nothing, so we make a zero pair with 12 positives and the 12 negatives that need to be subtracted.

🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛3 negatives subtracted once
🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛3 negatives subtracted twice
🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥⬛⬛⬛3 negatives subtracted a third time
🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥3 negatives subtracted a fourth time
Altogether we see 12 positives
3 negatives subtracted 4 times from our zero pair ⁺12 + ⁻12
⁺12 + ⁻12 – ⁻3 – ⁻3 – ⁻3 – ⁻3
= ⁺12 + ⁻3 + ⁻3 + ⁻3 + ⁻3 – ⁻3 – ⁻3 – ⁻3 – ⁻3 = ⁺12
⁻3 × –4 = ⁺12
For Teachers, Parents and Scientists
We use superscript ⁺ and ⁻ symbols for Multiplicands which represent units of either positive or negative Quantities.
We use standard case + and – symbols for Multipliers, which on the Set of Integers, represent counts of Actions.
The specific Actions are either additions to zero for multipliers with a + or subtractions from zero for multipliers with a –.
A lot of science involves equal and opposite Quantities and Actions. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Many quantities cancel each other from steps left and right to negative electrons and positive positrons.
So, doesn’t it make sense to start with the end in mind in Class 2 or 3 to connect basic explanations of math with basic laws of physics?
For 395 years, children have been told to "just memorize the rule because I said so." No more. Math should make sense!
