I make open source dev tools at entire.io like mise, aube, fnox, hk, mbx, pitchfork. Previously I wrote the heroku cli and oclif. ex-amazon/meta.

Your target/ dirs are eating your disk, especially with coding agents in git worktrees. mr-boxington (mbx) is a Cargo build cache that cleans up after itself: 3.9 TiB pruned on my dev box in 3 weeks. New in 1.21: cargo clippy + cargo build side by side, zero config 👇

btw my daughter named this box "Mr. Boxington" while I was working on this, seemed like the perfect name for the project
mr-boxington: I've been a rust dev for years and these things always bugged me but I've now fixed them. - target/ always filling up with no auto-pruning - worktrees don't share build cache - can't run multiple cargo builds in parallel - remote cache uses too much disk - ci is too slow mr-boxington.jdx.dev/

the package manager of the future needs to support (but not require) vendor-built binaries. nix does not solve this and will never be able to solve this.

just to clear up some confusion I still sometimes see: - mise has never used asdf - years ago mise relied on asdf plugins - today mise no longer uses any asdf plugins for any tool, however you can still manually install asdf plugins - modern mise plugins are now based on vfox plugins (which are lua instead of bash), however "vfox" is kind of a bad name since mise plugins have diverged extensively from vfox so they really should be called "mise lua plugins" or something - very few tools use vfox plugins, the bulk of them are aqua/github which is a much better model for security, reliability, and simplicity but not every tool can work with them mise-versions.jdx.dev/stats

usage-rs (my blazing fast rust cli framework) is ready for testing! ~2500x faster than clap! It’s mostly clap-compatible, but uses a serde-like architecture: your CLI is compiled into a static command map instead of rebuilding a command tree every time the program starts. - config-file and env var integration - negatable flags (--color/--no-color) - expression based validation - resolves clap's most upvoted issues - smaller binary size: 1.5mb (usage-rs) vs 3.1mb (clap) - NO THIRD PARTY CRATES! (except proc-macro2) - includes advanced completion and docs generation like my clis all have (usage-cli is not required for end users anymore!) it's experimental so there may be breaking changes in point releases for now. If you try it out, I'd love it if you could have your agent send me a summary of how well or not so well it went as a gh discussion. usage.jdx.dev/rust/

usage-rs wins on binary size over clap too. I suspect because it's crate-free since I otherwise wasn't optimizing for this.

lol I was impatient and bought this little guy while I wait for my xps 14 to get here. Plan is to use this for a bit and afterwards I can repurpose it as a benchmark runner to just run my CLI benchmarks on all my PRs (since shared runners are terrible for benchmarking)

one killer feature in my rust cli framework has gotta be the configuration. Automatically configure CLIs via --flags, ENV_VARS, and config_files.json. Automatically included in the documentation generators. this is based on logic I've taken from CLI to CLI throughout my rust career—refining for years.

In clap you have to have a giant match statement like this. Guess what won't be required in my framework.

I think these are the final numbers for the new rust cli framework. It's very close to shipping an experimental version. I think it could go out in my own CLIs (except mise*) today. If you're keen to try it out and happy to help squash some of the initial bugs that always happen when the first person uses it, once I announce the initial version it'll be ready for a slop cannon. The docs are going to come a bit later—probably this weekend and the initial release is not going to be stable so there will be breaking changes in point releases despite being v6 already (since I'm keeping the existing usage monorepo). *it works with mise, it just doesn't make sense to put it in that CLI first
