Thoughts as Spectrum Completes Acquisition of Cox
Industry Analyst Jeff Kagan offers comment on major expansion for Spectrum and the broadband industry
Spectrum has completed its acquisition of Cox Communications, marking another important step in the continuing transformation of the broadband, wireless, television and communications industry.
The company calls it Spectrum Day, as former Cox customers and markets transition to the Spectrum and Spectrum Business brands.
Services now available to Spectrum and Spectrum Business customers include Internet and broadband service with no data caps, one year of Spectrum Mobile for eligible customers, a $1,000 savings guarantee for customers who bundle Internet with two Mobile lines, TV plans that include up to $131 of monthly use of the streaming app, and more.
This expands Spectrum's presence into former Cox markets including Las Vegas, New Orleans, Norfolk, Oklahoma City, Orange County, Phoenix, Providence, San Diego and others.
I believe from an industry perspective, this is about much more than a change in branding.
The Spectrum Fiber Broadband Network provides seamless connectivity capable of delivering multi-gigabit speeds. Spectrum also says its network is supported by roughly 45 million secure local WiFi access points, which carry approximately 90% of traffic to wireless phones. This can help provide a stronger and more seamless connection inside and outside the home.
The combination of broadband, Wi-Fi, wireless and streaming is becoming increasingly important as consumers and businesses expect connectivity to work across multiple services and locations.
This acquisition is an important step in the current transformation cycle taking place across broadband, wireless and communications. Spectrum is now significantly larger, with an expanded customer base and a broader geographic footprint.
That creates opportunities, but it also raises expectations. Customers and investors will want to see whether the combination produces better connectivity, more choices, competitive pricing and a smoother experience across broadband, wireless, WiFi and entertainment.
This is a major growth step for Spectrum. The real story, however, is what the company does next with the larger platform it has created.
Later this week, I will be attending the Spectrum AI Accelerator Analyst Briefing, where the company may have more news to share. If there are significant developments, I will offer additional commentary.
The acquisition is complete. Now the next chapter begins.
