I’ve been writing about Andy Burnham in Manchester for a while. We’ve had a few run-ins but I think he has qualities that many people don’t appreciate and weaknesses that spell trouble. I wrote this for @ManchesterMill - I hope it’s insightful and fair. manchestermill.co.uk/stop-lo…

I think it’s a bit tenuous to link this one to Burnham. Fair to highlight this site being part of the Abu Dhabi ‘first dibs’ deal historically but No10 North wasn’t conceived until this year and this site was sold to the govt for offices in early 2024, long before he was PM.
Revealed: Man City owners’ link to Burnham’s No 10 North site trib.al/4YCwUu6

If evidence emerges that links Burnham directly to controversial Abu Dhabi stuff, that will be explosive. @InvisibleMapper has mentioned the GMCA loans, which is a legit point but not a Burnham decision. But let’s not get out over our skis ⛷️

Burnham definitely is caught up in the scandal because he chose to wade into it and he ran the city where all this happened. But here’s how we explained where things stand in our story. manchestermill.co.uk/man-cit…

We asked Vincent Hodder, the CEO of Leeds Bradford Airport, about the moment he realised that campaigners were right about the number of flights *actually* taking off at LBA. “It was like, ‘ah, shit. Shouldn’t somebody have figured that out?’” theexchange.news/the-great-n…

🚨 In July last year, we revealed that @ManCityCouncil had signed a 10-year deal giving @ManCity's Abu Dhabi owners "right of first refusal" on the sale of council land across whole stretches of East Manchester. Today, it's on the front page of the Sunday Times, crediting us.

Abu Dhabi money came along at exactly the moment Manchester most needed it. To me it’s no wonder Andy Burnham is willing to defend them: without the Mancunian economic miracle, would he be prime minister? I spoke to @lewis_goodall on his @LBC show earlier.
Is Andy Burnham 'defending' Man City's owners? Journalist Joshi Herrmann explains why the UK's 'friends in the Gulf' hold so much sway. @Lewis_Goodall

We’ve written the inside story of the Abu Dhabi relationship, incl. scoopy details. This all forces Burnham to confront the ‘Real Manchesterism’ that propelled him to No10. As @lewis_goodall observed, ‘Blairite’ is quite a good word for that doctrine.. manchestermill.co.uk/man-cit…

The eye-popping deal that gave Abu Dhabi ‘right of first refusal’ over large stretches of Manchester is on the Sunday Times front page - with a credit to @ManchesterMill where @jackdulhanty broke the story.

We mentioned the story in our piece about Burnham, Man City and Abu Dhabi yesterday. Which also includes a new detail about a senior council official saying in 2018: ‘You don’t criticise the council’s relationship with the football club’. manchestermill.co.uk/man-cit…

I explained Mancunian economics to the no doubt fascinated viewers of @BBCNewsnight. The Man City scandal has put the spotlight on Real Manchesterism, which - I regret to inform you - isn’t a doctrine to warm the hearts of Labour conference.

Thought-provoking story by @joshi and @ManchesterMill on the Manchester City-UAE scandal, which concludes that Andy Burnham is having to confront the realisation that “Real Manchesterism” is “morally compromised” and, dare they say it, “neoliberal” manchestermill.co.uk/man-cit…

The inside story of Manchester's relationship with Abu Dhabi: I've written a big piece with @jackdulhanty and @AlecHerron about the scandal engulfing City and how it forces Andy Burnham to embrace Real Manchesterism... manchestermill.co.uk/man-cit… @ManchesterMill

The crisis has pushed Burnham to confront the glaring contradiction at the heart of his project. To come out and bat for Real Manchesterism — the very successful, morally compromised, rather neoliberal doctrine whose success became his success. manchestermill.co.uk/man-cit…
