I believe that investing in expeditionary education would go a long way to reversing the adult adolescence and failure to launch phenomenon. I was already 20 the first time I sailed across the equator, but it was common for boys to start sailing at 11 only 200 years ago.
Young teenage apprentices, homestead settlers and longhunters (Daniel Boone was already recognized as one of the best frontier hunters in the Appalachian region by the time he was 15), surveyors, ranch hands, etc. were fairly normal. Young people need adventure, training, and purpose; keeping them perpetually sequestered in safe and predictable environments is no way to prepare a generation of capable and intrepid young adults.
I reiterate my proposal for a fleet of private boarding schools that are just tall ships, and the boys' school year consists of harrowing voyages around the globe learning music, classical literature, mathematics, astronomy, and navigation along the way.
